Going to pre-op if you don't intend to have operation

I've got a pre-op planned this week. I already postponed it from last week, but they are very pushy as the surgeon is in a rush to get the operation done this month (he decided less than three weeks ago).

I don't intend to have the operation. I haven't seen the surgeon at all since the first operation and this one is based on mistakes in my records (I know this as they sent me a copy of the fairy tale they sent my GP), so I don't feel this operation will help, no one has explained to me why they're doing it (although I'm 100% sure it's based on the mistakes they've recorded).

I've written to the surgeon's secretary stating the mistakes on the letter, why I didn't think the surgery was warranted, nor was I given any explanation and also pointed out things he told me before the first op, which have been disregarded since. I copied my GP in. I've heard nothing from the surgeon's secretary and my GP hasn't even entered my email onto my records.

So I feel forced into this. I didn't want the first operation, but was sort of coerced into it and I felt even more uneasy when the surgery planned was changed at the last minute.

As I said I've not seen the surgeon since the first op, but his registrar told him something untrue, and then it was decided to do this revision.

I thought if I went to the pre-op I could tell the nurse there and she could pass it on, but my DM thinks I will more likely be pushed into it.

It will be a waste of an appointment, and I don’t see how the nurse will get any further than you. Keep badgering the secretary.

You'd be wasting your time( and theirs) by going and as long as you've informed the consultants secretary that's all you can do

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 03/01/2024 15:33

Phone the hospital switchboard and ask to speak to Mr / Dr X's secretary. Explain that as it stands you will not consent to the surgery as you don't understand why they believe you need it, and you need to speak to someone urgently who can explain it to you.

I have a feeling you may have posted before, and this is an op to correct something that was done wrong in the last surgery, is that right?

Phone the consultant secretary ( via hospital switchboard) and make them aware again that you'll not be attending
It's your right to make an informed choice.

Rainbows89 · 03/01/2024 15:36

would the pre op be a time to discuss whether it is needed?

if so I would go.

if not then no

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 03/01/2024 15:37

Just go to PALS, I think this is an ongoing problem that needs someone else to look at.

DuploTrain · 03/01/2024 15:41

Surely the pre-op is just to make sure you’re fit and healthy enough to have the operation?
So no point attending.

As pp suggested, contact PALS to try to work out how to move forward.

Couchant · 03/01/2024 15:45

Massive waste of everyone’s time to attend a session that is purely to determine you are fit to be operated on when you don’t plan to have the surgery. Find another way to communicate your misgivings.

Greybeardy · 03/01/2024 16:39

If you definitely don’t want the surgery then going to the pre-op assessment will only mean that slot is wasted (Unless it’s a consenting clinic as well, in which case there would be chance to speak to a surgeon). Best bet is to find out which it is and cancel if it’s just a standard pre-op nurse appointment.

piemania · 03/01/2024 18:26

Not the exact same situation but I attended a pre op once and I was sure the issue had resolved itself and asked the nurse if I still needed the op. The surgeon happened to be in the hospital that day and he immediately came and checked me over and signed me out.

I'd keep pushing the secretary but if you get no luck, maybe just turn up and hope they are a available
