Stroller on plane

Hi 👋🏼 just in need of some advice. Travelling with toddler 22 months old in a few days time, bringing our (cheap) John Lewis stroller, but it doesn't fold down or go in the overhead lockers. I've heard that they take it when you board the plane or something, what happens to it after that? I'm worried it'll get broken, it's not particularly robust! Do I need to put a name tag on it? I guess it could get lost...

We travelled with TUI, they take it off you as you board and we got it back on the luggage carousel. It gets a check in label with your name like other check in bags.
I think other airlines may give it back to you as you disembark rather than at baggage reclaim.
We used a carrier in the airport as it was a fair distance from the plane to luggage.

Taken off you as you board. It goes in the hood and you collect it from
The luggage carousel along with your other bags.

It's good that it's a cheap one as it can get bashed around.

Hold. Not hood.

You can buy a buggy bag to put it in on Amazon, I got one for mine because the wheels come off easily. Remember to put your pushchair into the buggy bag while you are standing at the gate, so you can just hand it over or drop it at the steps without holding up the queue behind you, it's also easier to bag it up at the gate while you are not trying to hold a child and all your hand luggage at the same time!

I also got a cheap pushchair out of the charity shop for taking on holidays so I wouldn't be too bothered if it broke, I left my expensive Silver Cross at home.

Are you going on holiday? Lots of hotels hire pushchairs now which could be an option for you if you can survive at the airport without one.

Oh collecting it at the luggage carousel won't be of any use at the other end! We only need it for the airports as we have a proper buggy at our arrival destination. I've travelled before using just a sling, but DC was younger then... not sure what to do as ideally need the stroller for naps etc!

Yeh I was a bit surprised about this... was thinking we would be in trouble if we hadn't had the carrier with us. You can get the buggies that go in the overhead lockers, like the yo-yo I think. But they are pricey

TravellingWithBubba · 03/01/2024 21:17

Yes I know, but we leave Friday morning so got no time to get one. I think I'll ditch the stroller and try and manage without it... maybe I'll use a scarf to help me carry DC a bit. I used to have a sling but got rid of that she's ago! 🙈

That should say ages ago

A few airports have buggies to borrow, if that helps. Scandi ones are usually good!

KThnxBye · 03/01/2024 21:25

We’d just take the carrier on holiday. Fits in a bag easily and good for naps etc abroad.

Potatomashed · 03/01/2024 21:28

Sounds like you’re thinking of a sling type carrier- how about looking on marketplace to find a toddler carrier? Ergo, beco etc- all the ones which allow you to back carry- should fit a toddler and some are specific toddler carriers. I rate having them on my back- so much easier on your body as they get bigger

Oh really!! Well that would be absolutely fabulous - we're travelling on a Scandi plane so maybe we're in luck!

Which carrier do you use?
