Non shrinking baby clothes - do they exist?

I'm just about ready to shout at my washing machine as once again my 7month DD's clothes have shrunk. She's 88th/95th centile for weight/length and she can't get away with any shrinkage in leg or body length for tops/sweaters. I wash inside out at 30 and air dry without heat.

Next and John Lewis haven't shrunk but are quite pricey and she grows out of them quickly. H&m consistently come up great but it would be nice to choose from elsewhere as well.

Morrisons/sainsburies - come up small anyway
Tesco and Primark - the worst! Shrink to tiny all over
Asda - larger size overall but still shrink
M&S - these have been ok for leggings/jeans but every t-shirt and sweater have shrunk in length.

How is Matalan? What brands have you found that don't shrink? I use vinted for lindex/polarn but it's quite time consuming searching around for a seller who is selling a good bundle to make postage worth it.

Next is great quality and you should be able to find bundles on Vinted easily.

How big do you buy them? At 7 months and 90th centile, I'd be buying 12-18 months.

I've never had any clothes shrink. How old is your washing machine? Is it possibly washing at a higher temperature than it says?

Can you not just put her in the next size up? DD is also >90th gentile for height and weight. She went straight into 0-3 month clothes, and was in 3-6 month by the time she was 8 weeks old 🫣 We buy almost exclusively second-hand, so they were pre-shrunk and didn't shrink any further when we washed them. Now she's 15 months but is in 18-24 month clothes.

My kids pretty much live in tesco clothes and we've never had any shrinkage and wash at 40degrees

GanderingGoose · 02/01/2024 22:35

She's 9kg/71cm so should be in 9-12 months. 12-18 sleepsuits/vests are ok but tops drown her and leggings too big around the waist so fall down.

Its not just weight. Its height/length of body/length of legs and which shop you buy from.

Like womens clothes baby clothes are all different from different shops, so just buying 'the correct size' won't always be suitable

I feel your pain! 99+ centile baby here for height and weight, she's 4 now and in 6-7 clothes. Sometimes the clothes she wears can last for one or two wears before they are too short- she's long bodied so dresses are bad for it, or tops that flash her belly.

Tips are- avoid Tesco, they're tiny! Buy better brands that you can sell on after- scandi brands such as Duns and maxomorra are a bit more pricey, but you can get on Vinted and sell on again after. Lindex is good as you say, I've been quite impressed by pep & co (in poundstretcher!) From the high street.
A line and tunic dresses are great- you can wear long as a dress, and just keep on wearing with leggings as it gets shorter.
WAHM made clothes often have cuffs that fold over and fit for various ages. I've had outfits that fit a full year for her by wearing them a bit big then folding down cuffs if needed. If your little one is long bodied (for example, do dungarees pull up at the crotch) like mine, then ask for the next size up body length but the right size sleeves and legs. Helps sort the issue out.

Oh, and if buying from Vinted, bonds zipsuits are FANTASTIC. They come up big, super stretchy and comfy, last for ages. Their leggings are great too.

Devilsmommy · 02/01/2024 23:07

When you get them out of the machine do you give the arms and legs a stretch? That's what I do if they seem like they look a bit smaller

Babies grow VERY fast!

Growuppeople · 02/01/2024 23:43

Buy a bigger size?
