Hi all you lovely ladies

Never thought I would do one on these post.

The past couple of months my DH has been getting headaches and a couple of weeks ago he had a bit of a funny turn at work where his vision went. He went to the GP and they advised that he booked an Optitions appointment.

He went on Sunday and saw that he had some burst caperillies so they said that it could be down to stress from his new role as he is a team lead in IT, high blood pressure or diabetes as both run in his family. They said that they will refer him for a blood test at our local hospital.

He had a phone call from them this morning asking him to come into the eye clinic this afternoon and I had to take him as they might have to dilatate his eyes

He got seen after waiting ages were they did blood pressure, blood tests, put the dye in his eyes and then did a scan. They said that his blood pressure was high so repeated the blood pressure and then sent him to A&E where they gave him some medication. They have now admitted him, hopefully just over night, so that they can do a CT scan and X-ray and possibly put him on a drip.

He said his blood pressure was over 200! Apart from the recent headaches he has had no other signs that it was high. I have just had to take some stuff up for him like phone charger clean pants and socks for the morning and take our two DS one age 9 and 4as well as had no one to look after them for the 30mins. Our eldest suffers with anxiety so this has not helped him as i know that he is going to be worrying about it.

Am sat downstairs trying to worry about it myself as I know that if I show signs of worry our DS's will also pick up on it. I have put them both to bed as it was past their bedtime by time we got back

My DH is also in A&E tonight with chest pain (had a heart attack in the past). Drs want to admit him but no beds, he is currently sitting on the floor in the waiting room as there are no chairs. He went to get some water and someone else moved into "his" floor space so now no room to sit either.

DyslexicPoster · 02/01/2024 22:00

I'd get a shower or hot bath and go to bed. They will probably put dh on bp meds and hopefully he will be home tomorrow. But if he is still in tomorrow better there than unchecked at home. My dh was admitted via a&e for a suspected heart attack a few years ago. All was fine in the end. I had 4 young kids and no one to look after them. I hope it all turns out ok

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 21:49

@Mariposistaa my eldest went back to school today and my youngest goes back tomorrow as it was inset day for them. They broke up on the 15th Dec for Christmas where we live

Perfect then. But of normality for them. Let their teachers know.

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 22:01

@ChocHotolate sending you a hand hold as well for tonight. Looks like we both need itFlowers

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 22:05

@ParsnipAndPoppy its mainly outpatient appointments and routine ops that get cancelled. It just means that ward rounds take longer to get done, tests to be requested. Hopefully as he is in now, the CT would have been requested already

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 22:07

@DyslexicPoster That must have been very stressful and worrying time for you.

ChocHotolate · 02/01/2024 22:13

Thanks @Buffy81 The waiting is horrible isn't it?

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 22:19

@ChocHotolate and the knowing that you cant do anything to help apart from trying to hold it together and not pass your worries on the the kids.

I have moved myself upstairs with my terry's chocolate advent calendar, I know you can shoot me for not eating it last month but I just didn't feel like it in the end

@Buffy81

Something similar happened to a friend of ours. His BP was so high they 'red-lighted' him from his Dr's office to the ER (A&E). He was admitted and put on anti-hypertensive IVs to get his BP down then they ran a full battery of tests and monitored him for a few days. Turned out he had type II diabetes and extreme hypertension with an enlarged heart, but no heart 'disease'.

He ended up with medications for Hypertension, water retention and type II diabetes. He was also rx'd a mild anti-anxiety med, put on a strict low salt diabetic diet, and with orders to lose (quite a bit of) weight, and to exercise and learn to 'manage his stress'. But there was no lasting damage and he's doing fine now and (mostly) following doctor's orders.

Try not to worry OP. Hypotension can happen for all sorts of reasons. A ‘normal’ top number should be around 140. I have hypotension and mine was 260 once but without medication mine averages around 180. I’m on medication now and it stays nice and low most of the time.
It is probably mostly precautionary. They do take blood pressure quite seriously.
The thing is you can’t really do anything to change things while you don’t know so trying to be mindful will be the best way forward for you and the children for now and until you know more. Hope he’s okay X

Just in case the OP or anyone else is googling what you are saying, you are saying “Hypotension” which actually means low blood pressure. What you are describing and what is happening to the OPs husband with high blood pressure is “Hypertension”.
Glad your scarily high BP was sorted and hopefully autocorrect will play nice for you going forward!

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 22:27

@BlueberryBramble I try not to google things as I know that I will just worry more an think of the worst outcome. I always tell my Dad not to google things so am taking my own advise

@ChocHotolate that is appalling. Hope your DH is seen soon. 💐
@Buffy81 your DH is in the right place and blood pressure treatments seem to work effectively ime. If your DH has earbuds with him suggest he listens to some hypnotherapy on YouTube or something like the Sleeping Forecast on BBC Sounds.

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 22:44

He is still waiting for a bed and was told at 8:00 it would be 30 mins. Still waiting for another blood pressure to be taken again and that was nearly an hour ago and now waiting for someone to take him to get the Head CT done which I know is a 20 min scan

Toddlerteaplease · 02/01/2024 23:07

The one benefit of the junior doctor strike, is that decisions are made more quickly as the consultants are around much more. We've barely noticed the last couple of strikes. The only issue really was getting discharge medication and letters done, as many consultants have forgotten how to do it/ do t have the correct log ins. Hopefully your husband will get a bed soon and will make a swift recovery.

LightSpeeds · 02/01/2024 23:07

Thinking of you... Hope he's OK xx

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 23:15

CT done but still no bed on the ward so taken back to A&E.

@Toddlerteaplease I find that in the trust I work for. We had a lot less MRI inpatient requests coming down. I remember when the Snr Consultants went on strike we had loads of requests coming down from the wards as there was no one for them to talk to. Half of the request didn't even need to be done, they were just ticking the boxes

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 23:17

@LightSpeeds thank you x Gotta wait for the CT and X-ray results an see what other blood pressure results he gets over night and take it from there I guess

2chocolateoranges · 02/01/2024 23:24

They are pushing through with the tests tonight which is a good sign.

hopefully he gets a bed soon and is able to rest.

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 23:36

@2chocolateoranges Thats the one positive. I hope he gets a bed soon though as I know he is shattered as he was up early this morning with me when I started having some breathing issues and pain. I have been awake since 2:30 this morning and him around 3:30

I know I should get some sleep, but I feel to awake even though I know I need it as I have to carry on as per normal for the kids tomorrow, I don't want to miss any messages from him.
The house feels to empty and quite, the bed feels big so I have the bedroom lamps on, the downstairs hallway for security and the landing light on as it makes me feel safer (have always done this if he has to go away for work on the very rare occasions since we were burgled many years ago) and heart radio playing on my laptop for background noise

@Buffy81 Handhold here too. My SIL had a similar experience very very recently. Blood Pressure was 247/120. GP sent him to A & E in an ambulance. He did, unfortunately, have a small stroke ( A Lacunar stroke), but he is doing ok and only minor damage, which still seems to be resolving. Blood Pressure still over 150/105 in spite of blood pressure reducing tablets, I know how scary it us but your DH is in the right place

JingleSnowmanTree · 02/01/2024 23:51

✋🏼 🤚🏼 nice fresh pair for the next shift.

i hope he gets sorted & is home soon 🤗

Buffy81 · 02/01/2024 23:57

Thank you so much so far ladies for tonight.
I am going to try and get some sleep and I will update you if I hear anything.

I have just messaged him to say that I hope he gets a bed soon and to call me if he needs to

jolenethea · 03/01/2024 00:11

It's a worry and a shock when family are taken unwell but he's in the best place, so try to relax knowing he's being looked after.

Buffy81 · 03/01/2024 00:13

He is saying that he is close to discharging himself as he is getting to tired to stand, chairs are getting to uncomfortable to sit him. Was told 4 hrs ago that it would be 30 mins for a bed. He said that if they do his blood pressure again its prob gonna be even higher. he has found a plug socket on the floor which is more comfortable than the chairs.
Said to him that I really don't want anything bad to happen when he is at home as he would prob end up staying in for longer
😥

DyslexicPoster · 03/01/2024 00:18

Oh no, that's not great. He needs to stay in for the tests. I have had high BP but for pre eclampsia. He needs a plan or unchecked it catches up with you.
