Train travel -where does luggage go ?

I usually drive (so sort my own luggage) or go by coach (so it's put in the luggage hold)

But by train- where do they go ? This is long distance (think London-Edinburgh)
Do they go on the floor ? Overhead racks? Space behind seat? Luggage storage at the end of the carriage ?
One medium pull along case and handbag ( which stays with me )

TIA .

A medium case could go either on storage rack at either end of each carriage or in the space between the backs of seating. Smaller cases can fit in overhead racks.

It'd probably need to go on the luggage rack. Some trains have space between seats. Overhead storage is likely too small for a medium case, but probably depends on the train.

Ah , thank you
I haven't travelled by train for years and would probably have had a squashy holdall but now a wheeled case is much easier to move .

Some trains have luggage racks near the doors. Most have overhead racks and space under the seats that can fit small to medium cases.

If its really busy and you need space ask the guard, sometimes if there is extra space (depending on train type) they can put big luggage in (not bikes though - need to book with ticket if long distance)

If your medium case is bigger than aircraft overhead locker size (which can go on the overhead racks on the train, or between gaps between some seats on the LON-EDI route, more in 1st class than standard) then you will need to put it in the luggage rack at either end of the carriage.

On UK trains the racks above the seats have wildly differing heights. Some can accommodate a decent-sized airline style wheely case and some are surprisingly short and won't accommodate much. If the train is busy, the luggage rack at the end of the carriage is often quickly filled and has no space for additional luggage. If you're at the starting station it's good to get to your train quickly. If you join the train at a mid-point on its journey, you'll have to take your luck.

There’s often gaps between the seats where they change direction and there’s 2 seats back to back that are suitable for medium sized bags, and potentially closer to your seat to keep an eye on than the racks by the doors.

There's storage racks

It depends on the train, some have lots of leg room and you can fit a case in front of you, some have space between sets of seats. I can't reach overheard luggage racks so haven't used those, they wouldn't fit a wheeled case though. I wouldn't rely on being able to put things in the luggage racks at the end of each carriage. They don't have them on all trains anymore, also if they do they fill up fast. I travel by train a lot, I use a rucksack and keep it with me. I spent one journey from London with my folded pushchair on my seat and me sat on top of it holding the baby because the train was so full. Also bear in mind other people often move your case round to get theirs out and to fit theirs in around yours. You can choose to book a seat near the luggage rack to keep an eye on your case.

The lner trains have luggage space at the end of each carriage and overhead racks. I tend to book a seat near the carriage end if I have a suitcase so I can keep an eye on it. Saying that there’s cctv so I think your stuff is safe.

Vinorosso74 · 03/01/2024 17:17

LNER trains seem to have more space for luggage than Lumo but the overhead racks are the same depth (pretty decent size). I like to put my case between seat backs if it's too heavy for the overhead rack. Sometimes there is a bin there.
If you book direct with LNER you can move your seat reservation, so if you'd prefer to be near the luggage rack at the end of the carriage, you can move your reservation.

CoatOfArms · 03/01/2024 17:18

Overhead racks, always. Or at least somewhere you can see it. I have had a case stolen from a train.

idontlikealdi · 03/01/2024 17:19

LNER have space at the ends of the carriage, you'd get a small carry on type overhead or under the seat.

lljkk · 03/01/2024 17:21

Not in the cycle storage space. Some trains are badly designed or people jump on the 1st carriage they see which has a big space & plonk themselves & luggage there, not realising or caring that it's the only space the cyclists are allowed to use.

End of carriage racks have been fine for my luggage when no room on seat next to me.

I would pack into bags small enough to go on the overhead luggage racks if possible.
