Dc Martens Platforms

So. How bad are these for feet?

I have a 15 year old and a school with a lack of proper uniform guidance so frustratingly these have gone under the radar in the school rules by other pupils.

And now it's all she wants for her birthday.

I'm worried they'll be bad for her feet.

Less worried about the DMs as if its a birthday thing that's okay.

She's 15 and wants them. You can afford them. Get them and make her happy.

cardibach · 02/01/2024 20:16

Why would they be bad for her feet? DMs are much closer to actual foot shape than most shoes. I don’t think the platforms are an issue.

SausageCasseroles · 02/01/2024 20:18

In my head it's the platform every day affecting her gait?

I wouldnt have a problem with platforms for occasional use it's more the everydayness of school shoes.

But if it really doesn't make a difference then that would make life easier! (I've never worn platforms!)

For clarity- I mean as everyday school shoes! I dont think I put that in my OP!

How big are the platforms?

kitsuneghost · 02/01/2024 20:22

Platforms aren't any worse for your feet than normal shoes. The platform is the whole foot rather than part foot like stilettos. So your foot isn't contorting.

It's these ones. There's 3 heights apparently. Normal, medium and these higher ones.

Yes it's not like stiletos. I thought it would affect her natural walk while she's still young. And schools shoes are very single day rather than rotated.

But kight be a happier house if they were okay!

I don't know about the platforms I've never worn them - they're hideous! But then, I guess I'm not 15!

I've been wearing DMs as my main footwear since I was 16 and my feet look no different to when I was a teenager myself - exactly the same shape/size and no foot issues I'm nearly 50 now.

As someone else said, platforms raise your whole foot to the same level so I can't imagine that they'd be any different to wearing platform's boots/shoes tbh.

GreyCarpet · 02/01/2024 21:02

By main footwear, I mean literally every day. I wore them to school, I wear them to go out, I wear them for work now. I rarely wear anything else. DMs are actually really good for your feet and were designed that way.

Tygertiger · 02/01/2024 21:03

I have them. They’re not bad for feet, although they’re quite heavy. However before you spend the money I would check with the school in case platforms aren’t allowed - schools I’ve worked in wouldn’t have allowed them.

SausageCasseroles · 02/01/2024 21:33

Oh Grey me too- I wore dm shoes theough 6th form and uni every day and only alternated with boots!

It's more the platforms I'm wondering about.

And yes in any sensible school they'd be banned but they're not in ehrs and she wants them 🙄.

I don't know. But I can't imagine that the platforms would be any worse. Or much heavier tbh.

Why not take her into a shop to try them on and see how they feel? Try some on yourself and get an idea, maybe?

SausageCasseroles · 02/01/2024 21:52

I think we will - I just wanted to check it wouldn't harm her if she wears them every day for several years.... !!!

Thankyou 😊

Dr Marten's level of quality means they probably won't last years.

SausageCasseroles · 03/01/2024 07:56

The DM patent shoes she's had so far have lasted 2 years - and only really showing signs of wear because they are patent.

They're not made like they used to be are they though - I remember my boots lasting forever and considering resoling them.

DD1 has these - but she's 6th form. She loves them but they don't flex like a normal shoe so she's had lots of problems with blisters and now alternates them with other shoes to give her heels a break.

I have the platform bottoms but in boot form. I specifically buy them as I have scoliosis and on my feet all day as a teacher. Apart from the subject whether it’s part of uniform, I would encourage my own children to wear them - strong, well made and comfortable.
