Teens have gone 100% nocturnal!

Post Christmas. Cars broke. Skint. Nothing to do. Absolutely pissing it down every day so can't even go for walks.

They're literally going to sleep at 5am for the day after being up all night.

I keep waking them up and they just go back to bed/fall asleep on the couch. Ages 15, 17, 18.

Theyre going to be buggered come Monday.

I can't say much as I remember doing the same in my teen days but I feel exhausted just thinking about it.

Same here with dd aged 20 but she’s an adult so not much I can do! (Home from university).

Rowawa · 02/01/2024 17:47

The food bit is most annoying.

They get up and it's breakfast time to them so they don't wnat spaghetti /tacos etc...

DS was making nuggets at 4am 🤣

It's only a few more days then we will be back in the swing.

It seems to be winter that it's worse.

Bloody bats 😂😂

Same here. I tried turning off the wifi but they turned it back on AND changed the password so I couldn’t access it. Never cross a teenager.

If a child of mine did that (and a router reset didn't default the password) i'd simply take the router away, contact ISP for a new router with off site parental controls.
If i was WFH i'd go back in the office.

Whose fucking house is it????

I was much the same when I was a little older. At 21 I was unemployed and living in my own. With nothing to do all day and no reason to get up I ended up not going to sleep until about 4am and then not waking until mid day. I didn’t want to be like that. I would go to bed at around 11 but just lie awake for hours. And this was long before smart phones and WiFi.

arethereanyleftatall · 02/01/2024 17:51

I am so surprised by how light hearted this thread is!! I would absolutely do my nut if my dcs started making nuggets at 4am. Literally ape shit. But my eldest is just 15 so maybe I have a swift and horrible learning curve coming my way.

PiggieWig · 02/01/2024 17:51

Yep, not only them but me too. Today was a killer at work. If I’m still awake at 2am I’ll cry.

13 and 12 yr old here, the 13 year old not too bad, asks to be tucked in at 9 30 on school nights and is up dressed and out the door by 7.50am for school. Weekends ... he has football Sunday mornings but on Fri nights he'd stay up all night. Problem is he then wakes me to tuck him in 🤣 The 12 year old doesn't like to get out of bed before midday no matter what time he goes to bed 🙄

Remaker · 02/01/2024 17:56

DS16 can’t manage an all nighter. If I get up in the night for the loo during the holidays I always check under his door for light and will invariably find him crashed out asleep with light still blazing, having tried to stay awake to watch some sport or other.

DD17 used to be nocturnal during holidays but this time last year it really messed with her, she couldn’t get back into a normal sleep routine and was exhausted and tearful for weeks into the school term. She now sets an alarm for 11am during the holidays so she still gets a sleep in but it doesn’t get out of hand.

OMG that would drive me nuts! My 15yo and 18yo are asleep by 11pm and get up around 9 in the holidays/weekend.

Hats off to you

My DS 16 and 15 are the same

Come Monday they'll be knackered but soon back in the swing of it

Mine stays up all night but hes, fairly sensible hes diabetic so i give him a sandwich if he needs it and he has snacks in his room.he wouldnt dream of cooking at 4am or any time tbf!,

Presumably that's a joke, otherwise it's about the worst advice ever!

Lolovans · 02/01/2024 18:51

Mine are nothing like this at all - wondering if I have a defective model or something?

16yo is revising like fury for her GCSE mock exams that start on Monday, she's sleeping 11pm-8am ish. 13yo doesn't have anything to game on in his room (on purpose, we tried it and it was RIDICULOUS) so usually goes to be about 9pm when I get fed up of Fortnite in my living room.

EasternStandard · 02/01/2024 18:53

Ds 18 got home at 8am on NYE and went to bed

So he’ll need a factory reset at some stage

EarringsandLipstick · 02/01/2024 18:58

They're literally going to sleep at 5am for the day after being up all night.

That's nuts. I've a 16, 14 & 12 yo.

I am at that stage of needing to go to bed early or I just don't sleep; eldest teen also likes going up quite early & reads / chats to friends so she's no problem.

Younger 2 want to stay up & yes, would be on Xbox for as long as they were let.

They can stay up later during holidays but no Xbox after 930, and no phones.

I can't believe you haven't put your foot down about staying up all night & cooking at 4 am 😳

thesugarbumfairy · 02/01/2024 19:13

Mine too. 16 and 14. The 16 year old in particular. I started waking them earlier on Sunday. Today it was 9. Tomorrow im waking them at 8. They go back on Thursday and have to be up at 7.

Do most grow out of this? i wasn't like it after about 13 and my DD never was.

Between me and my friends, we know quite a few families whose children especially boys, who have never grown out of it and are in the 20s now, bone idle.

My DS 22 hasn't.
It drives me nuts as he's home temporarily. He works evenings so it suits him. He appeared at 4 today. I think he's been up for a while but wasn't hungry. He says he can get up when he needs to. He's starting a full time job soon so that will be interesting. The other DCs have full time jobs & seemed to manage it, although the one who stayed here at Christmas was just as bad on some days.

The lads I know who did this in their teens are now in the 20s with jobs and relationships .

I’m actually relieved to read this as I have been attempting with no success to prise 14 year old ds out of bed during the day. Tbh if I could I would stay in bed too. Weather bloody awful no money and dark

Same here! We managed to get to the cinema on Saturday, but he fell asleep halfway through the film.

I’ve been like it since birth. DD is the same (but not quite to this extreme). She has seen in every new year since she was born.

OneMoreTime23 · 02/01/2024 19:33

DD and I diagnosed with ADHD last year. She has no screen time after 9pm but often reads for hours in bed. (I used to do the same.)

BethDuttonsTwin · 02/01/2024 19:33

Same here. They’re not back till Tuesday so I have told them they can do whatever they like till Monday morning, when I will be getting them at 7 am no matter what time they went to bed the night before, thus they’ll be shattered Monday evening, early night, back on track for Tuesday…fingers crossed 🤞🏻

MysweetAudrina · 02/01/2024 19:37

I have one who gets up, goes to the gym, comes shopping with me and one that is living in a different time zone. Making curly fries and nuggets at 2am. Asleep all day, awake all night. Wandering the house at all hours.

Brandyginger · 02/01/2024 19:44

With ds15 we’ve been taking phone off him and into the kitchen at 10pm. No gaming after 10pm. Tv off by 11pm. Wake him up at 11am by opening curtains. Has to leave the house once a day (even if just to end of road and back).

daffodilandtulip · 02/01/2024 19:54

Yep, DS14. He can just turn it off though, and come Monday, be asleep for 11 and up at 6, like nothing changed.

(Autistic) DD17 has never done this. 10:30pm to 7:30am Every Single Day. She might lie in til 9 at a push but she's still back in bed by 10:30 😂
