Is buying second hand furniture actually worth it?

Is buying second hand really worth it? Large furniture item? By the time you’ve actually paid for a van I’m not convinced it’s worth it. I’m trying to buy a second hand sofa that only needs delivering one mile! And it’s £80 for a man with van 🤔 literally 15 mins work but will need two men as I can’t help with the lifting as have to wait home to let them in. By the time I’ve paid for the sofa and £80 to deliver I’m better off just buying new in sale?!

I like buying second hand as I can afford much better quality that way - especially for wood items. But I usually either buy from antique shops locally that deliver or things off Facebook / eBay that'll fit in the car.

I only use a man with a van if it's a large, expensive item I've saved loads on (oven / fridge freezer etc)

AmazingDayz · 02/01/2024 14:22

Yeah the sofa looks better quality than the one I found in the sale and bigger but I just can’t justify £80 for a 15 minute job and one mile 🤦‍♀️

Apart from 2 beds and a dining table and chairs, all the furniture in our house is second hand. I've never used a courier/van service as I've always collected stuff myself or had it delivered.

If the sofa is what you want and significantly cheaper than new, then I would pay for a driver + van to collect it.

AmazingDayz · 02/01/2024 14:28

£230 but I’m not paying someone £80 to deliver it a 5 min drive I’ve found a new one for £320 delivery £6

Totally worth it. Realistically if you buy it new you'll also have to pay for delivery but it will probably be three times the price and several weeks wait time.

Almost every item of furniture in our house is second hand, we'd never be able to afford the stuff we've got if we brought it all new.

MAY324 · 02/01/2024 14:30

I hired my own van which cost £26 for 2 hours! Meant I could go and pick up myself.

drowninginsick · 02/01/2024 14:30

230 seems a lot for second hand sofa they don't really hold their price. Can you offer 250 if they sort delivery?

Reallybadidea · 02/01/2024 14:31

A brand new sofa that costs £320 will not be good quality. If the one you're buying is better quality then it's worth it, even if the van cost is extortionate.

EmpressaurusOfTheSevenOceans · 02/01/2024 14:32

I bought all my bookcases from local charity shops that charge £20 per delivery. When I was furnishing my flat I ordered several at once, still £20 for the lot - well worth it.

It’s half price

A brand new sofa for £320 will most likely be a terrible quality sofa. I presume the second hand one was significantly more when new so even with the £80 delivery it's going to be a better choice.

The sofa is £150 without the man and van is that a lot?

What brand and age is the used one?

barkymcbark · 02/01/2024 14:34

I buy large items via my local charity shop as they deliver, there is a charge but they bring it in the house.

PaminaMozart · 02/01/2024 14:35

Also post photos of both if you want informed advice

AmazingDayz · 02/01/2024 14:37

It wouldn’t be MN style sofas so not sure I want to post 😂 the 320 is definitely not as nice but I just need a new one quickly as mine is awful

I bought second hand corner sofa for £180. Would have been £3k new. A new one for £300ish will be rubbish and waste of money.

winterwonderland23 · 02/01/2024 14:37

Yes definitely, I got a brilliant second hand sofa recently from a local place that cleans then up etc, and they delivered to me for free.

Movinghouseatlast · 02/01/2024 14:38

It depends what make it is.

I got two Fired Earth sofas for £1000, they would have been 6 times that new.

With sofas you get what you pay for. I bought Multiyork sofas 25 years ago and they still look brand new.

So if your second hand sofa is a good make it will be better value than a cheap Argos one.

AmazingDayz · 02/01/2024 14:33

I thought you meant £230 plus delivery if it's £230 including the delivery then I'd shop around for another quote and get the second hand one personally but you seem set in buying the new one from Argos so it's a moot point really.

Although I would double check exactly how much delivery will beid imagine it's more for larger items.

GreatGateauxsby · 02/01/2024 14:38

It depends but often not….

I just went through this as we needed some ikea furniture for my DD. Kallax Trofast etc

we ended up buying new…
because it’s a punt as you never know what condition it’s actually in… then Logistically trying to source all these separate large pieces and then coordinating and arranging a van.
it wasn’t practical or worth it….

That said we did buy a 4 piece set of oakfurnitureland furniture (which while not wow wow wow is quite nice /alright) for £150 £250 inc man and van… this included tv bench thing 2 display cabinets and a bookcase…
retail on it was a couple of grand so 🤷🏻‍♀️

OldTinHat · 02/01/2024 14:38

During the lockdown I bought a secondhand sofa for £150 unseen and paid £80 for two guys and a van to collect it from 10 miles away, deliver it to me, take my old sofa away and drop it off at the tip.

I love it three and a half years on, and there's no way I could afford to replace it with new, even half price in the sales.

Wow they are literally just delivering it not taking the old one
