Goal: tone up skinny-fat tummy and skinny-sagging bum.

Needs to be: Free, short, no equipment required. I don't mind doing it daily but it needs to be under 10 mins a day. I work FT, hybrid, desk job, have kids.

I already do lots of walking, and am pretty fit and in decent shape - just want to improve the aforementioned areas. Am nearing 40.

Thanks in advance!

HIIT or tabata, squats, lunges, hip thrusts, russian twists.

All of those would be better with weights or resistance bands, but doing them bodyweight would be better than nothing.

Tons of stuff on YouTube.

Thanks @XmaswasbadNYisworse ! Any particular YouTube channel recommendations for a newbie?

  1. Plank: 2 minutes
  • Engage your core and hold a strong plank position.
  1. Glute Bridges: 3 minutes
  • Focus on a controlled movement, squeezing your glutes at the top.
  1. Bodyweight Squats: 3 minutes
  • Ensure proper form, engaging your glutes and thighs.
  1. Mountain Climbers: 2 minutes
  • Increase intensity to boost heart rate and work on core.
  1. Lunges: 3 minutes
  • Alternate legs, ensuring a deep lunge to engage glutes.
This 13-minute routine focusing on core and glutes for toning. Remember to maintain proper form for optimal results.

Sorry, I go to the gym and use weights there, have a PT to set my workouts, I only use YouTube for yoga when I can't be bothered to go to the studio!

Joe Wicks was good for general cardio in lockdown, though it's very cheesy. Not really for toning though. Les Mills might have stuff but I don't even know if they have a channel. Probably best just trial and error for what you like.

DNLove · 01/01/2024 21:53

I know you say few but you could pick a kettle bell in aldi/lidl. There loads of you tube classes, Joe wicks etc. Anything from 10 mins to 45 mins.

Bodyfit by Amy has some short ones. You can get dumbbells from Argos, I never thought I would, but it helps vary the workouts! My mum likes Lucy Wyndham-Read but I haven't tried those.

Bodyfit by Amy on YouTube I absolutely love her!! She does all sorts and isn’t patronising or annoying!

PickMeAnExercise · 01/01/2024 21:57

Thanks everyone, I'll have a search through YouTube and see which channels I gel with! Think I'll start small/cheap, try and be consistent, and see how I get on. It's a bit overwhelming all the different techniques and things!

Ooh two recommendations for Bodyfit by Amy, I'll have a look! And I'll keep an open mind about kettlebells and dumbbells - it's just, I know what I'm like, I'm awful at throwing money at a new idea and then giving up.

Fistbump @JollyHostess101 I've always been a reluctant exerciser, tried a few Pilates/fusion sort of things but Amy is my go-to! Such a range of things, they don't get boring. Explains good form too, I don't like waffle so tried some of those young silent worker outers but no chat whatsoever gets boring. Amy is a good balance!

Chrispackhamspoodle · 01/01/2024 21:59

Lucy Wyndham Read 7 min workouts on YouTube are free and it's only 7 mins so no excuses. She also does 20 min ones
I get surprisingly sweaty in 7 mins and I'm fairly fit

WickDittington · 01/01/2024 22:18

I doubt that 10 minutes a day is enough but if you really want to tone your muscles 10 minutes of HIIT - 45 seconds of something as hard/fast as you can go, then 15 seconds rest and move to the next exercise Repeat for the next 10 minutes.

Or 10 minutes of alternating full arm planks and push ups.

Thank you! I'm just trying to be realistic - I won't fit it in otherwise. A nicer bum and tum is a nice-to-have for me, not a priority, but I would like to see what modest improvements I might make with consistent effort.

Body weight squats, burpees, full body press ups (from the full arm plank position) all done with excellent form. Add in maybe step ups (on a kitchen stool or two stair steps) mountain climbers and bear crawls. Do these all with focus on your core - so, bum down, stomach flat - and go as hard and fast as you can for 45 seconds. To make 10 minutes do something, don’t cheat doing as many as possible.

You could also look at AMRAPP exercises (as many rounds as possible) for 10 minutes.
