How strong is your (hypothetical) survival instinct?

Whenever I watch a movie or tv show involving zombies/dystopia I always figure that if I did find myself in a post-apocalyptic world, I’d probably just down any gin that I could find and hope there’s enough sleeping tablets somewhere to ensure I drift off peacefully before meeting a gruesome end.

Obviously, if the script writers had the same approach, these shows would be very short and quite samey.

So, when if the zombie apocalypse occurs, will you be fighting them off in a battle for the survival for humanity, or shrugging your shoulders and thinking “fuck this”?

at a guess proberly heading for the cdc or uk similar, that or if all else fails, mission control for the majority of the various protection systems then if needs be, if launch could be achieved it may trigger other automated systems and hopefully reset earth.

I'm not really up to fighting, but would do my very best. No way would I just roll over.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 01/01/2024 23:23

My survival instinct would be to stay close to my DP and my 16 year old daughter.
My DP quite possibly already has a plan, my daughter has a mental strength inside her I have never known in another person.
DP will keep my younger children and me alive whole my eldest keeps us sane.

That is my survival plan!

The zombies are not the problem. I would survive them.

But a full-on social breakdown? The praticalities of sourcing food, fuel, antibiotics, dentistry and vaccines in a broken UK? It would be hell on earth without a plan.

There's a true crime podcast called Dirty John. A mother meets a man online and quickly moves him in, one of her daughter reacts very badly to him right from the start, mother won't listen even though she has three failed marriages behind her.
To cut long story short the man attacks the daughter in a car park, he's a huge strong built muscle man, well over six foot, the daughter is tiny, petite build, he comes at her with a knife and stabs her several times, yet she manages to somehow overpower him and kill him with the knife.
She was a massive fan of the zombie films, esp walking dead and credits that to doing what she did. None of the cops or paramedics involved could believe someone so slightly built could do what she did against her attacker.

Off topic, but they made it into a series with Eric Bana, Connie Britten and the girl from Ozark (she’s wonderful, but her last name escapes me). It’s brilliant! Highly recommend.

under uk marital law, if eg zombies all motorways would be blocked to civilian traffic too, i believe

I'm not made for a post apocalyptic world. Some Valium or morphine will do me thanks.

GrumpyMiddleAgedCow · 01/01/2024 23:29

In my head I would put on some sort of warrior fight, and in reality though I never backed down I was the second person to die 😂

Wanderpeg · 01/01/2024 23:29

I don’t think you can ever really know until you’ve been in a situation where that instinct has kicked in (and even then it could be different each time).

I could 100% have sworn that I’d be useless in a fight. I’ve always been a complete wuss, actively avoid any type of conflict and wince at the idea of even accidentally hurting someone.

But when I was thrown into a situation where I was in danger I ended up becoming vicious. Biting (never knew human teeth could actually do such damage) kicking, scratching, apparently even made a concerted effort to poke the bastards eyes out with my fingers.

No idea if I could do it again.

BooksAndHooks · 01/01/2024 23:33

I have a very weak survival instinct. In those sort of situations I definitely wouldn’t be fighting.

This is true. I remember my car being hit on a busy road at 2am. I just got out of the car and tried to deal with the group of males in the other car who had no insurance.
Everyone later told me I was mad and I shouldn't have got out of the car.
It was a bit stupid in hindsight but at the time, I just reacted instinctively.

I'm sure I would've stayed in the car and driven off at top speed if it was a bunch of zombies though. I'm no way confronting them. Plus I have kids now and I'm less brave.

RoboBongoCuckooCop · 02/01/2024 02:12

I'm totally useless at most things, let alone anything survivalist. Got enough drugs to see me out.

verdantverdure · 02/01/2024 02:34

The coming apocalypse is why I run.

(I'm only half joking Wink)

I have kids and pets and elderly relatives so in a crisis I will have my hands too full with their needs to down any gin.

Emma8888 · 02/01/2024 04:45

I can't say I spend time thinking about zombies BUT I always know how many rows of seats there are to the nearest 2 emergency exits on a plane, where the 'break window' is on a train, how and where I would hide from a gun man in the workplace, where emergency exits are in hotels etc.

Chichimcgee · 02/01/2024 04:57

I’ve been training on 7 days to die. I’m ready 💪

Lamelie · 02/01/2024 06:00

If I survived the first hour I’d be ok, but when tested- evacuate now! Bomb scare! I faffed around getting blankets keys, water.

Some of these replies are unintentionally hilarious, especially the clay pigeon on. I’ve shot clays before and despite being a fairly accomplished competitive pistol shot managed to amputate part of my finger by accident with the rifle. I’ve tried to top myself quite a lot before and I think with zombies etc I’d probably attend a church ceremony or do something else fun then find some sure way out - TBH at this point my body MUST be worn out enough that something would do the trick. I wouldn’t wait to be ripped apart and I’m no fighter so that would likely be the outcome for me.

Passingthethyme · 02/01/2024 06:16

I encountered a baboon in Thailand that came into our room, my survival instinct was pretty awesome if I do say so myself, it came at me and I'm still here to tell the tale. Terrifying at the time though and I'm now irrationally scared of all monkeys!

Chilicabbage · 02/01/2024 06:18

Wwz zobies? Nah, no way.
Walking dead zombies or only nocturnal ones? Made a workable plan including mapping where to get generators, concrete, food supplies, building supplies for fence, which library is nearest to loot for info books, and how to split my block into homestead (assuming at least half the people wouldn't survive😂). Bleach to bleach our path in case they follow scent.
Also assumed local prison has weapons...

BabyDubsEverywhere · 02/01/2024 06:40

Honestly, if the WiFi was down for more than three days, I'd be a goner. Same for hot water, electricity, and all other modern comforts. I was not made for a post apocalyptic world!

I think my DH would be in his element though, so the kids will be fine with him
