Pavlo Kordiyaka is incredible!
But agree when they throw the kettlbells behind them it makes me feel sick!

Last time I watched was years ago. They were arm wrestling, one of them broke his forearm. You heard it snap and saw it go. 🤢 I've not watched it since.

The Eddie Hall doc on Netflix (I think) is worth a watch. It did cool my enthusiasm a bit - it was sobering seeing the breathing aparatus. Also rather frank about his (lack of) sex life. They must be on so many steroids.

WSM is great, been watching it for years. I liked the 1985 final when Geoff Capes won it on the beach at Cascais. Or Terry Hollands; for years I thought this is the one, but just missed out on winning a number of times.

I prefer it when they're tossing Citroen AXs over for fun. It's hard to visualise how heavy a 150kg anvil is. But if you watch the really old ones it was simple; Bill Kasmaier squat lifting 3 attractive females makes perfect sense 😜

I think the drug use and being overwieght is not very good for them, although there do seem to be a few who don't have such huge pot bellies.

Lovetheriff · 02/01/2024 15:06

The steroids are a real issue and as the sport has become better rewarded the levels of training and ‘development’ could result in bigger risks. The essential principle of strength training isn’t a problem and plenty of old timers like Kasmier are in decent shape having slimmed down post competition.

Whats going on for someone to bleed out of their eyes, nose and ears? Brain damage?

How do you eat 12000 calories in a day, what does he eat?

willingtolearn · 02/01/2024 15:11

I was quite interested to see research on the momentary blood pressures reached during heavy weightlifting exercises (like Eddie Hall's deadlift) ;

"The greatest peak pressures occurred during the double-leg press where the mean value for the group was 320/250 mmHg, with pressures in one subject exceeding 480/350 mmHg. Peak pressures with the single-arm curl exercise reached a mean group value of 255/190 mmHg when repetitions were continued to failure" from Arterial blood pressure response to heavy resistance exercise 1985 Journal Exercise Physiology

Made me feel better about my blood pressure.

soupfiend · 02/01/2024 15:18

Are they fit and healthy though? Low blood pressure normally, low cholesterol, good blood sugars?

47minutesdown · 02/01/2024 15:22

I often wonder (and sorry to lower the tone!) how often contestants shit themselves with the strain required!

lljkk · 02/01/2024 15:33

I shouldn't think so, Not at all Compared to surfing, ski-jumping, competitive skateboarding, jumps on horses, pro-cycling-racing (BMX, MTB, road), lots of competitions, really.

C1N1C · 02/01/2024 15:45

Dangerous on several levels.

-A moment of wrong technique could rip a muscle clean off the bone.

-All the supplements, steroids and strain on your heart often leads to heart attacks at far younger ages.

-The pressure to look like that as an influencer on the younger generations.

GasPanic · 02/01/2024 15:45

Can't believe it is good for you.

Both the injuries when you participate in it, and the diet/regime necessary in order to compete at that level.

Mind you, pretty much anything taken to extremes physically is going to be potentially dangerous.

I read that Eddie Hall would set his alarm, wake up in the middle of the night to eat
