Just reading about the young lottery winner who blew a million on plastic surgery and ended up back home working in a chip shop.

Anyone know of someone who won big and was it a good outcome?

Yes a distant relative of mine won big money back in the 60s/70s. They used the money to start a business and never looked back. Generations on that side of the family have benefitted from their good fortune and wisdom.

A colleague won £1.2 million.
Continued working for about 5 years, built up a bit of a property portfolio, enjoys numerous holidays abroad.

Retired and bought a small farm that’s being converted into a home for him and partner with holiday lets.

Life seems pretty good for him.

Yes a friend

No it didn’t. Several million (think it was 3.8m) all gone in about 8 years.

Oh great idea for a thread! Don't know anyone so maybe I'm in for a windfall soon . . . 🍾

I knew someone who won around 5 mil on the lottery. He had grand ideas of starting a business but no actual real drive to do it and spent a lot of time buying stuff connected to it but not putting in the actual work, and the business never materialised. His marriage dissolved as his wife said that she felt he acted as if by him providing the money for them he had done his part, and he didn't actually put effort into anything anymore at home or in the marriage, or in his working life etc. So for him, the money had a negative effect on his life.

Guy at work won £100k on a scratchcard

He went part time and spends more time looking after his physical health and that of his family

One of my mums best friends won a million pound house on omaze, sold it a few years back and now retired early living a nice comfortable lifestyle.

yes a local lady won the football pools years ago started a very successful company lives in luxury
does anyone remember Viv Nicolls the lady who was the inspiration for a programme called spend spend spend? she blew her football pools win one husband died but in the end she had nothing think she turned to religion but she died in poverty

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 01/01/2024 16:08

Yes, I remember the sad story of Viv Nicholson. Her husband died in a car crash in the sports car which the big win enabled which was terrible. I don't think she ever really got over it and went into a downward spiral. The guilt must have been overwhelming.

I'm not sure if there was the amount of advice in those days which is available today. Becoming extremely rich very suddenly is not necessarily going to solve all your problems. Be careful what you wish for.

If I ever win big I don't plan on anyone except DH finding out.

Only my mum knows, I just up and left with my DCs. Never looked back! I did have a mummy make over. But don't splash the cash it's just nice to live comfortably and know my DD and DS have a trust fund when they're older.

I know someone who won a low 6-figure sum at a time when they were in real financial difficulty (through no fault of their own, just they had small children, were renting, had low paid jobs). It enabled them to buy a property with a small mortgage and really helped them out (without being so much that they got silly about it).

I have put a lot of thought in this scenario (far more than I reasonably should considering I buy two lottery tickets a year...).

I would not ever want to be perceived as a rich person. It's my belief that would only attract trouble.

It attracts enough trouble when you've worked for it - we have been asked for in total more than £100k from our families, saying no never makes you popular, I'd imagine people knowing you'd won a lot of money would be bloody awful.

Itsneverme · 14/05/2024 10:45

I had been re housed miles away from home when I won due to DV. So no one ever wondered and knew nothing. Worked wonders for me
