What family activities do you do?

Just generally on weekends, evenings or during time off?

I have a dh, ds14 and dd10..and a dog. Wes do a lot of walking and cycling and have challenges for the nicer months such as wainwrights and enduros. But it would be nice to do other stuff too. We spend a lot of time on lakes in the summer too…. Summer is much easier when you’re an active/outdoorsy family.

We’re an active family and like spending time together… even the 14yr old! And even in winter we’re happy to get out for a walk, but it’s a bit samey sometimes!

We don’t live near family so can’t do the usual GP visit on a Sunday, we don’t live near a city and we’re strapped for cash!

What do you get up to as a family?

We make a bucket list of things to experience, see, do and eat for each season. For example, on our summer bucket list we had an extensive list of NT sites, country parks and seaside towns to visit and then for our winter list, we had lots of Christmas-themed events, museums, indoor play areas etc.. I find these lists helpful and easier to plan around our schedules.

When the weather is too cold or rainy, we have movie nights, and cook as a family together.

We schedule family day on Sundays as Saturdays, the kids have sports or lessons during the morning/early afternoon then either. playdate or a birthday party or visit with friends.

Plank challenge
Online 20 min yoga session together
Discuss one current affairs topic over dinner
A chess puzzle a day

HappyCamperTent · 30/12/2023 19:18

A bucket list is a good idea!

I’m a much better parent outside the house. When in I just tidy or chill!

We do play board games and bake, but we could do that more often.

What activities do people do out of the home?

Board games, movie night with popcorn, walks with friends, geocaching, parkrun, tried orienteering a couple of times at a country park, cycle to an ice-cream place, beach walk with kite flying, go to a posh town and enjoy the charity shops or second hand bookshops. Sometimes play music together. Sometimes argue or all veg out on YouTube!

Goldfishonabike · 30/12/2023 19:24

How about board games? Chess or more advanced other board games?
or making your outdoorsy time more varied - make bonfires and make food on bonfires, can be one even in winter? Or going camping, or getting into bird watching or foraging for wild herbs and berries, basically things that takes you further into nature experiencing?
how about volunteering as a family, anything of that sort near you?
or organize local activities, if you’re a bit stuck for ideas, maybe you can create a group for families with similar interest and meet up for walks/hikes or runs or campfire pancake making, lots of stuff? Organizing something as a family is an activity in itself. You may be able to connect with local families via social media or online local groups?

Goldfishonabike · 30/12/2023 19:28

Also crafting! Making jewelry, mucking about with clay, painting, felting..
or more advanced cooking activities like fermenting or making elaborate cakes or dishes?

I'd love to see those lists, great idea. Can you post?

We have horses so spend a lot of time with them, also walking, going to theatre, concerts.
Inside the house, playing games, tidying up after the kids 😂🙈.
