Dd2 received this mug for Christmas...

From her friend & the instructions were to hand wash only, which we have done.

However, the writing is not very secure & I've had to re-stick several of the words already.

I wondered if any of you know of a way to seal it? But so it's still useable?

Tia!

Looks like the text is a vinyl sticker stuck on top rather than print? In which case I'd probably not use it as a mug at all as it won't last getting wet and being washed. Keep on a desk and store pens or make up brushes in or something instead...

You could as a local pottery art place if they'll glaze it for you

rochethenut · 30/12/2023 12:53

doesn’t look like it’s been hand washed very thoroughly! 😂

lucysmam · 30/12/2023 12:56

🤣 @rochethenut nope, I didn't carry on the last time it was washed because of the peeling again. I didn't want to lose any of the stickers!

What a sweet thing for the friend to do. I agree it’s not a useable mug to drink from though. I’d stick a pot plant in it.

shazshaz · 30/12/2023 13:17

You could try sealing it with Mod Podge. Buy the dishwasher safe version so its waterproof.

Agapornis · 30/12/2023 13:30

Someone's been busy with the cutting machine! You could try clear nail polish, but it's not going to be a functioning washable mug with those stickers. Perhaps ask the friend to make something else that doesn't need washing?

Don't ask at any pottery places, you can't glaze plastic - it will definitely burn and ruin the kiln.

PhillMichellsbrother · 30/12/2023 13:31

Honestly, I’d tell her to use it as a pen pot.

You couldn’t put those stickers in a kiln to glaze it.

KindleGirlie · 30/12/2023 13:33

You can get waterproof modpodge, or suggest it’s a pen holder etc. what a cute gift!

They don’t look like they’re proper thermal fix stickers. If it’s done properly they should be almost flush with the surface not looking like stickers. These are probably stickers designed for water bottles imo.

I don’t think there’s anything you can do to make it more stable. Having it glazed by a potter risks the kiln heat frying the design.

paint on sealers often need the surface to be sanded so it all sticks well. A highly glazed mug isn’t going to adhere well.

best bet is to ask a business who makes custom mugs if they could do something similar that is washable.

or you could do it yourself through an online photo mug site.

the potential problem is it’s Taylor swift so there’s problems with it being unlicensed ‘merch’ even though it’s a gift so it may get rejected (unlikely. I’ve had terribly dark memes printed onto mugs as gifts)

But as the design is so simple it wouldn’t be too difficult for someone to recreate it and get a one off mug made.

Klcak · 30/12/2023 13:37

I’d mod podge it, it won’t be perfect round that protruding text, and use as pen pot/ornament.

lucysmam · 30/12/2023 15:08

Thanks all, I'll magically clean the inside without getting the outside wet & dd says she'll use it for make up brushes.

I'll have a hunt for similar that's useable as a mug for her.
