Ideas for weekend in glasgow

I’m staying to Glasgow city centre in the summer for an event our children are attending, with people I don’t know very well (brought together by the event). We’ll have about 48 hours to kill around the event. Please could I have some ideas of what to do! We sort of know each other well enough not to ditch each other so I think we’ll be looking for things to do together rather than separately but I think I want to propose an agenda people can dip in and out of to avoid awkwardness. I’m thinking nice food, sightseeing, I like history / museums / finding out about the history of a place and art. I’m not so keen on shopping but imagine some of us might want to.

We also thought about getting the train to Edinburgh for the day, we all live in the south of England so most of us haven’t spent much time in either city.

Where will you be staying and where is the event? Are you wanting things to do with your children or alone? What age are they?

Children are older teens and going to event alone so just adult mums with time to kill! Teens might have time for some shopping and dinner with us. Staying right in the city centre, premier inn at George square.

I’d send them to Edinburgh for the second day. They are beside Queen Street station and it will only take them 50 minutes. Different vibe and thousands more tourists.

I did a walking tour in Glasgow and it was great. The one I did was street art, but there were others on offer to - architecture and history were two of the others available. I would really recommend it.

We enjoyed taking hop on hop off bus there. We do that in most big cities. You get to everything interesting and usually get some vouchers too. The Ksomething art gallery was lovely and going up to the top of necropolis.

Yay! A weekend in Glasgow!

I’d recommend Kelvingrove Museum. Then a wander up Byres Road. Stopping off for some Glasgow hospitality 😊Also a walk round the university (Glasgow) - the cloisters are beautiful. The Hunterian Myseum.

Princes Square for those who fancy a posh retail experience.

If any fans of CRM you could visit Glasgow School of Art. The willow tearooms. Could also jump on the train to Helensburgh & walk round The Hillhouse. It’s currently encased in a mesh ‘box’ which means you can walk round it to roof level! It gives you wonderful views up & down the river Clyde.

The Hill House

Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s architectural masterpiece turns art into a home.

The kelvingrove art gallery in Partick and the transport museum Riverside. Theres also the tall ships at the transport museum. Both free and can reached using the open top tour bus that a pp has suggested. There's actually loads of great stops on the bus and you can plan your journey online and hop on/off the bus at your leasure.

When exactly in the summer OP? If August then you have to go over to Edinburgh to experience the festival for a day.

Otherwise, I concur with @maldivemoment, that's pretty much the ideal itin. There are also lots of great pubs around the Merchant City (which is where you're staying) if you want to lunch/afternoon drinks, but the Kelvingrove/West End is a brilliant day out.

For day 2, if you rarely do get to Scotland then actually I would jump on the train to Edinburgh. You get off pretty much dead on the Royal Mile and you'll love the history there.

If there are shoppers in your group, leave them behind in Glasgow for day 2 and they can shop till they drop. Edinburgh not nearly as good for shopping.

Thank you so much for all the great replies / ideas! I think that’s a great idea to do a day 1 Glasgow itinerary and a day 2 in Edinburgh. I like the idea of a walking tour too!
