Insurance renewal

I added my car insurance onto my home insurance cover back in October. It cost me £128 to do so, up until the home insurance renewal date in mid January.

Yet the renewal cost for my car insurance has come in at £820?

Anyway, any suggestions of which providers to try? I've run it through some comparison sites, but I'm not finding much under £600 with large excesses.

My car is ten years old and I've got 5 years no claims, and low mileage. I do need business use though.

I know this is probably just the way of things right now, but it stings to be back at the same type of premium as when I started driving (on what was actually a newer car then) and probably being back to instalments instead of being able to pay it in a one off like I managed for two whole years 🙄

Thanks.

Not sure how the linking it with your home insurance works - I've always kept mine separate - but insurance has shot up this last few months.

My dh has been driving for over 30years, and his shot up when the renewal came through in the Autumn. No change in circumstances except one more year's no claims. Tried comparison sites, calling companies directly, getting on line quoes from companies no on comparison sites but couldn't get anything for less than 55% more than the previous year's premium.

Newer cars are easier to repair or buy parts for - so the car ahe is a factor and not one your thinking of.

Insurers aren’t allowed to offer discounts at new business anymore which has had the opposite effect of what was intended, and everyone is getting quoted what insurance actually costs now. Historically insurers lost money on new business and would try to make it up at renewal and hope most people wouldn’t switch. Claims costs have also shot up, parts aren’t as readily available and people are having to hang onto their courtesy cars longer leading to some price gouging by hire car companies. I work for an insurance company so can see the effect from both sides!

I would try some insurers not on comparison sites like direct line, Aviva, or dial direct is usually good for me. Make sure everything is 100% accurate. If your car is on a drive overnight for eg make sure you haven’t put it down as being on the road as it could make a little bit of difference
