What time should NYE gathering start?

I’ve invited three couples over for NYE. Not doing sit down dinner but instead substantial nibbles, party food and we’re going to chat and play some games. They don’t know each other so I’m already stressing about that (!) but also can’t decide when to invite everyone over. For a normal party I’d have people over from 7 but that seems an awful long time to fill if they don’t all get on like a house on fire! Is 8pm acceptable? It seems really late to start, but that’s because on most evenings I’m in bed by 9.30. 🤣

About 4pm and ask them to leave by 9 so you can be in bed on time, or are they staying for the pips?

Sadly staying for the pips! My DH did ask if he had to stay up too. 😅

I’ve said 8pm - hopefully they all get on and the time will fly by! 😃

8 is way too late!

7

We've just been having this discussion - although everyone who's coming knows each other. DH said after 6, I said after 8 as don't it's a marathon rather than a sprint so think we've compromised at 7.

DobbyRuth · 29/12/2023 20:53

9! They’ll be staying til at least 1am

NotARealWookiie · 29/12/2023 21:10

8-8:30…

8pm. Gives them (and you) time to have something more substantial to eat earlier and get ready.

verrymerryberry · 30/12/2023 10:05

8 or 9PM is fine for NYE

OverTheGrip · 30/12/2023 10:09

I would give them a ‘window’ rather than a specific time tbh. Especially as you’re not having a sit down meal. So, anytime between 7:45 & 9pm?

It can be awkward couples not knowing each other all arriving at once and also give them the option to eat at home first. DH and I always have a nice meal at home before we head out on NYE

We start at 6pm. But, we are 4 families who do this every year (and lots of other meets inbetween) and it works for us.

We do a proper dinner, so that takes time and the kids are split in two rooms with two TVs and watching movies, Tik-Toking etc.

We normally stay until 1.30am-ish.

StillWantingADog · 30/12/2023 10:17

8

Patsykenning · 01/01/2024 20:45

So, I said 8 and everyone got there between 8 and 8.30. The evening went really quickly (to me, anyway!) and I think 8 was the perfect time. Everyone stayed until 1.30am in the end. Shattered today but it was worth it! Thanks for your replies x
