If you're planning to eat healthier come the new year, what will you be buying / avoiding in your shopping

I've not been feeling great nor had much of an appetite all over Christmas and it's kinda spurred me on to try and kick start my weight loss plan a bit earlier.

I'm playing about with my Tesco online shop but I'm running low on ideas for back to work lunches / evening meals etc .

Can I steal some of yours please?

I'm going to try to go back on the anti-inflammatory diet. I have seborrheic dermatitis with a touch of rosacea and it REALLY helped last time I did it. My skin was glowing and I could almost do without foundation for the first time ever. I felt bloody great too, not as bloated or gassy.

My biggest issue is living with DH and 2 young adult sons who love everything that DOESN'T form part of the anti-inflammatory diet. So it makes joint meal times quite difficult sometime. And meal planning harder, it takes more time and I don't have a lot of time or energy when I@m working.

Could you tell me more about this? I have mild rosacea and the doctors aren't interest but happy to give anything a go at this point.

@growgrowinggrown It was a couple of years ago that I followed it. I think I followed this: https://www.perriconemd.com/blog/dr-perricones-3-day-diet/

I followed it strictly for the 3 days to see how I'd feel and it did have an effect on the redness on my face by the end of it. But honestly, even though I knew it worked for me, it was just so hard to keep up for much longer than about 5 days. I like the stuff that have a detrimental effect on my skin and gut too much.

Maybe you could try it for a few days and see how you feel/look? And if it worked maybe tweak it a bit to make it more likely you'd follow it long term?

Even if you just google "anti inflammatory diet" you'll find LOADS of info, not just from the website I linked to. To me it's just a very healthy diet. No counting of calories or anything.

The promise of a visible difference in your looks in just three days may seem too good to be true, but with Dr. Perricone’s 3-Day Diet, you can experience dramatic changes in how you both look and feel. It’s even a perfect way to jumpstart the 28-Day A...

Just remembered, that I cheated slightly and added in some sweet potato with my evening meal otherwise I think I may have been slightly hungry. But it still worked anyway.

Reducing fat and carbs.
Increasing fruit and veg.

That's about it!

I'm also thinking some food swaps i.e. cauliflower rice instead of actual rice, and butterbean mash instead of potato mash. Anyone got other swap ideas?

Swede; carrot and cabbage mash is nice on cottage pie. Can put a small bit of potato in too. Its also nice with a cooked dinner. Courgettes are a good pasta alternative ie. Can layer with lasagne too.

I am doing high protien low carb. If want bread got some thin brown small loaf. Also going to try exercise more as wfh a lot. Even if just 15 to 30 mins a day on mini trampoline or walking.

Try to make your meals about 40% lean protein, 40% veg and 20% wholegrains. No added sugar, no alcohol, no caffeine.

Why no caffeine, LessStressed, as a matter of interest?
If black, I find it helpful.

Sorry Lesstressed saw your reply upthread.
My BP is fine, I check it regularly at home. I don't drink coffee after 3pm. I guess, if one sleeps OK, and I take your point about disrupted sleep leading to sabotage of diet/healthy eating, then it's OK.

@treacledan71 great idea about the swede forash and courgette for lasagna/pasta! Always looking for ways to sneak extra veg in! I used to make courgetti noodles but I don't have the device anymore!

*for mash

How wierd, all your toast, bread, pasta and rice would give me real stomach problems if that was my main diet.

I was going to say the same thing.
All those refined grains would wreak havoc on my gut.
@Jouleigh have you considered going back to eating meat? Meat and fish are much much gentler on the intestines for most people.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 30/12/2023 10:35

@CoatOfArms I also have the same issue, just got bloods before Christmas. I was so upset about my cholesterol levels that I ate an entire selection box. Stress related sugar binges are a huge issue for me so I need to cut it out completely I think. Dreading it. Am overweight too.

solsticelove · 30/12/2023 10:40

My plans for food this year are to eat and cook as much real unprocessed food as possible. A sort of ‘ancestral diet’ I guess.

So grass fed, free range, organic meat and dairy. Wild fish. Bone broths. Good fats like coconut oil, avocado, butter, olive oil, oily fish. Vegetables and fruit. Nuts. Seeds. Some sourdough and sprouted grains.

Of late I’ve let too many seed oils back into my diet. It’s so easy to do if you buy a shop bought pie or cake so I plan to cut them out again.

Yes it's quite nice. Crisp it up too. Also do bubble a squeak with it with just a tablespoon of mash. The courgette I just chop really fine. Going to the veggie mash to work with some chicken and bit gravy. Have a long day when in office so more filling than salad.

My sleep is terrible. I have a lot of pain from various autoimmune conditions which keeps me awake, so I try to avoid caffeine completely. No one in here sleeps well, so I tend to forget that other people do 😁

I go simple, eat produce not products and aim for 10 portions of fruit and veg a day.
