Your S.M.A.R.T. NY resolutions?

Interested to hear your Specific/Measurable/Achievable/Realistic/Time-bound goals for 2024!

It's business-speak, I know, but it's clear that resolutions planned like this work far better than just saying something vague like "I want to lose weight" (sorry!).

How/ when/ where exactly are you going to achieve your goals in 2024?

I've only got one so far, to run a 10k in less than an hour (by following a training plan online) - but want to add more. Writing a diary every day, for example, is something I'd love to achieve but have never managed so I need to somehow figure out a plan for that.

What are yours?? 😊

Nobody?? Any bog-standard resolutions, then?? 😁

Stop eating crisps & similar snacks until the end of January.

I've done this often for Lent in previous years but didn't do it last year because there was too much crap going on in my life at the time. I've occasionally kept it up for several weeks after Easter, too. If I can make it to the end of January, I'll be trying to keep it up week-by-week after that. Crisps and butter (on toast, sandwiches, etc.) are the two biggest contributors to my unhealthy diet, so once I can get my crisp addiction under control, I can start to think about how to cut down on butter.

I am doing Dry Jan for the fourth year running but with one day off to celebrate DS2's graduation ceremony, mid Jan.

Specific - I want to lose 1lb per week. Doing this by cutting out all sugar, white flour, snacking and reducing portion sizes, basing meals on lots of veg, some fruit and lean protein and a few wholegrain carbs.

I will return to 4 exercise classes a week, which was my usual until about a year ago. But building up to it as I am very unfit, so will do online classes in Jan until i feel strong and balanced enough to join public classes in Feb.

I do need some more goals.

OP, with journalling, the best way is to do it first thing or last thing at night, and to set a timer until you are in the habit. It can be just 10 mins if you like.

Dry January, even though I actually barely drink anyway it does creep up a bit of Christmas.

Leave the house every day. I know this sounds a bit basic but I have agoraphobia which in the past has been very extreme. The way I keep on top of it is to leave the house every day, even if it's just for the 10 min round trip to drop DD at school, no excuses (except bad illness).

I want to read more in 2024

I would like to read 25 books over the year. I know that's not loads but it's more than I managed this year and I think is realistic.

I love reading but have come to the realisation I rarely do it! Yet my screen time is very high... so I will do this by swapping out scrolling time and keeping a track of how many books I read (aiming for 2 per month ish). I have bought myself a notepad to write down what I'm reading, like a little reading diary.

GiantPandaAttacks · 30/12/2023 10:23

At least 15minutes of reading everyday.
Regular exercise weekly.
Sew items using my stash of fabric instead of buying more.
Stop spending money on stupid things, including dopamine-seeking foods.

My NY resolution is always the same every year: to not make any NY resolutions.

NY is the worst time to make resolutions. Not yet out of holiday mindset and a grim season. Feels set up to fail. I make my resolutions at the beginnings of spring and autumn, when there is change in the air. I find my targets much more realistic and much more achievable if I start them in around February and September.

Cool 😊. My screen time is far too high as well. I'd rather not have my phone in my room overnight at all as that just starts the day off on a bad foot - alarm goes off, I pick up phone and go downstairs for coffee .....
But I don't feel I can leave my phone out of my room these days as I have teens who are constantly out till the small hours - feel I need to be contactable in an emergency. Anyone tried one of those app blockers?

I will loose another 2 stone before my milestone birthday in the Autumn by using a combination of Wegovy and intermittent fasting.
I will complete my masters degree in June and find a new job.
I will continue to plan one experience a month (theatre trips, spa days, craft classes etc)

Bog standard resolutions are -

Only use screens (phone/computer) for work or looking for something specific - and not to sit "for five minutes rest" that turns into an hour mindlessly scrolling through shite for no reason.

Get new double glazing (been saving for years for this).

Declutter and tidy and paint THAT cupboard.

Have more mini-breaks away.
