Visiting NYC

Namechange1233 · 28/12/2023 12:33

So I've had it in my head I want to visit NYC for a week

Flights I can afford. Day to day expenses I can afford.

But where on earth to stay? (On a budget). It's just me on my own.

Somewhere central? I stayed in Hell’s Kitchen which was convenient for walking to most of the ‘biggies’ and is convenient for subway or cabs to get elsewhere. It’s also pretty busy so feels a bit safer alone. I also stayed down 8n Alphabet City which has more atmosphere but is a bit trickier for getting to and from theatres, Central Park etc.

I thought Hell's kitchen was a TV show?

It’s also a part of NYC! Near Times Square.
Some suggestions from Trip Advisor. I can’t remember the hotel I stayed in sorry. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/SmartDeals-g60763-zfn7102350-New_York_City_New_York-Hotel-Deals.html

I stayed in a Hampton Garden Inn on W28th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue. It is the plant/ flower district so lovely atmosphere! Handy for most places. You will walk lots regardless where you stay. All you really need is a bed so any of the chains will be fine. Go by the price and reviews. Hotels are pricey.

Queens is very cheap and a short subway ride to Manhattan etc. we stayed in LA Quinta inn which was very basic but ok,and had a great place called Pete's grill close by that did great pancakes, brunches etc.

I lived in NYC for 6 years. Personally, I’d stay somewhere Upper West Side or Upper East Side (roughly 60th to 96th street on either side of the park). I think it gives you more of a sense of staying in a residential rather than a tacky tourist area.

Everything you’d want to see will be easily accessible by subway (or taxi) within a few minutes.

Namechange1233 · 28/12/2023 13:00

They all look so so expensive!

Scrub that. It was a few years ago now and reviews for La Quinta inn are shocking now. Shame as we were going to use this hotel next year,so I'll be following this thread for recommendations now too ☺️👍

New Yorker next to penn station and madison square gardens has served us well in the past.

Namechange1233 · 28/12/2023 13:52

I so want to visit central park in the sun.

I've often wondered how it compares to Hyde park + Kensington gardens.

We’ve stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Long Island City because family live nearby. It was generically non-descript and LIC isn’t massively interesting but it was clean, comfortable, near the subway and pretty cheap.

IggyAce · 28/12/2023 13:57

We’ve just booked New York and we have booked the Hilton Double Tree time square. Do check small print because a lot of hotels charge an additional resort fee.

OdeToBarney · 28/12/2023 13:58

Another vote for the new yorker Hotel. I've been to ny three times and always stayed there (once with a friend as a 20 year old, and twice with DH).

biedrona · 28/12/2023 13:58

Hotels will costs a whack!

Paperbagsaremine · 28/12/2023 14:01

NYC is expensive though. So finding somewhere to stay starts with, "where can I afford?" unfortunately.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 28/12/2023 14:03

I found TripAdvisor's NYC forum extremely helpful when we were planning our trip, which was quite some time ago now. It was via the forum I found the accommodation we'd booked was illegal and we ended up booking a then newly built hotel in LIC.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 28/12/2023 14:08

Another thought - worth having a look at airline deals that include hotel accommodation.

HotChocolateWithCointreau · 28/12/2023 14:30

Aside from accommodation, there's soooo much you can do for free/cheap in NYC.

Walk the High Line (recommend!!)
Brooklyn Bridge - we walked it and saw weddings etc
Ground Zero
Grand Central station
Central Park
Stratton Island ferry

All freeeeeeee!

FlyingCherub · 28/12/2023 14:36

We booked via BA.com and got such a good deal with our flights and hotel - it worked out a lot cheaper than booking separately.

poolcrew · 28/12/2023 14:57

We always stay a little way out in Brooklyn, then you can walk the bridge into NYC. Or Jersey City is cheaper and you can get the PATH straight into NYC

Namechange1233 · 28/12/2023 15:47

I want to try the dollar pizza , visit central park and walk around NYU and Columbia.
