Salter DuoWave air fryer and microwave

Does anyone have one of these? It's new and I can't find any reviews online. Am really tempted because I need a new microwave and would also like an airfryer but short on space, so this would be ideal.

There are reviews here www.robertdyas.co.uk/salter-26l-air-fryer-microwave-oven#reviews

fatsatsuma · 31/12/2023 08:49

@youveturnedupwelldone thank you I hadn't spotted those. Reviews seem pretty good.

Has anyone reading this got one?

Interesting! One thing that sticks out is that it isn't a flatbed microwave and has a turntable. This decreases the usable space.

How do you cook a whole chicken on a rotating turntable in a rectangular cavity?

BrieAndChilli · 31/12/2023 09:12

Watching with interest as we need to replace our microwave and so far as a family of 5 who has to cook veggie and non veggie each meal I have not jumped on the air fryer train as just another thing to find space for and not sure how useful it would be for us but am considering a microwave/air fryer as we have to get a new microwave anyway.

gonogo · 31/12/2023 09:43

@BrieAndChilli I am also wary of jumping on the conveyor belt of the latest kitchen gadget. Avoided various items like the Instant Pot, the 10 in 1 cooker things which seemed indispensable on MN but aren't mentioned here now. Don't have a microwave even as it won't be used for anything other than reheating although had a lot of use from my combi microwave years ago (it broke down after 13 months and didn't replace)

HPFA · 04/01/2024 12:52

I've just bought one but haven't had time to use it yet - it only arrived last night! I was humming and haahing when it appeared with a flash reduction on Amazon.

Chose this one as I have a Salter sandwich maker and a Salter soup maker both of which work superbly well.

If you can afford to wait a couple of weeks I can report back when I've tried a few recipes in it.

I did wonder if sir fryer microwave was just another name for a combination microwave but apparently there is a difference.

fatsatsuma · 04/01/2024 14:55

@HPFA thank you - please do report back!

I've started using mine so first report!

Instructions generally clear and we've had no problems working out what to do so far. Admittedly haven't tried the more complicated defrost/cook combinations as I rarely do microwave defrosting anyway.

For the person upthread who mentioned the turntable - it doesn't rotate in combi oven mode.

The microwave seems to work differently to my old one - it doesn't heat things up as quickly over a short time (so what took 45 secs in my old one now takes a minute) but heating up leftovers I can now do in 5 minutes rather than eight.

I tried the combination oven on a favourite meal and it did pretty well - leeks undercooked but that was my fault for not tasting first (I think they just needed to be sliced more thinly) and the salmon came out beautifully in just five minutes - admittedly I do like my salmon quite rare though! The cost was about 15p according to my smart meter so a definite saving on the main oven.

So far I've tried out garlic bread and chips in the air fryer - the garlic bread worked really well and at about 5p is a massive saving on oven heating. The chips we didn't really get right - they got too brown on the outside and not cooked enough inside- am going to try microwaving them for a few minutes first and then air frying.

Will report again when I've used it a bit more.

fatsatsuma · 10/01/2024 18:24

@HPFA thank you!! Really helpful. I'm particularly interested to hear how you find the air fryer, so if you can bear to come back and say more when you've used that a bit more, that would be amazing 🙂

I had another go at making chips - this time a few were perfect, most were acceptable, a few were still underdone. So hope to get it completely right in a couple more tries.

As to whether an air fryer is "worth it" - I'm glad I bought this microwave. I think I'll get enough use out of the extra features to make it worthwhile. Daughter is planning to make back in for a while over the summer and I suspect the ability to get oven type food on the table quickly she will find very useful. When she lived with us before I was always gritting my teeth at seeing the oven go on to reheat an individual quiche. And a reheated home made soup is a much nicer proposition with a pile of freshly made garlic bread to go with it! But I'm not sure of the money saving element on many foods. My oven costs about 40p an hour, this machine goes at about 50p. And my gas hob costs a lot less than both. So there's a relatively small number of things that will be cheaper to do in the air fryer than in either of these.

I'm very glad I didn't buy a separate air fryer as I suspect it would be sitting in a cupboard a lot of the time.

I suppose I'd suggest to anyone thinking of buying one to make an assessment based on their family size and the foods they like to look. A single person could obviously save quite a lot of money with one - a family of four I'm not so sure. If you have a smart meter check the cost of your oven and gas hob. Maybe write down the meals you'd normally cook in a two week spell and think if any could suitably go in an air fryer.

Glittertwins · 20/01/2024 08:27

Thank you for this. I had also seen the combination microwave/air fryers being advertised. We also don't have room for a separate air fryer so was interested in this when the microwave gives up.
