Hip bursitis

I think I have caused hip bursitis to one of my hips from jumping on a trampoline at a kids birthday party 🤦🏻‍♀️

That was months ago and had a low ache pain on my left hip, this then developed to ain like heat and lower back aching !!!
After lifting something heavy. I'm doing really well here aren't I?!!!

So I have hip bursitis. I'm doing physio when I can do the exercises. Young children now always easy. And they want to join in! Lovely but shouts of look at me look at me , it's not relaxing.

Anyway what I'm asking is has anyone survived this and what made it not flare up, liveable. I don't want to take anti inflammatory drugs for a long time and I'm not sure if the physio is too soon if you know what I mean.

Help me fellow parents 😟

This happened to my friend. Very similar scenario. Initially this was misdiagnosed as bursitis. Months of no improvement and it turned out she had tear in the cartilage around her hip joint. Physio was no help until she had the op she needed. Don't be afraid to seek further advice if you need to.

I've survived it! Make sure you do your exercised. Go up stairs slowly. Watch your posture sat on the sofa/chairs.
Mine took ages to go but has deffo gone.

Have you had it diagnosed by a medical professional? That's your first step. I've not heard of bursitis being caused by an injury (not saying it can't happen - I'm not sure, but I'd be getting a proper diagnosis before starting any treatment).
In the short term, most hip problems respond well to heat (wheat bag heated in microwave) and ice (wrap a bag of peas in a tea towel and apply to the hip area for 10-20 mins 2 or 3 times a day)). It won't cure the issue but can help with symptoms. Take ibuprofen when you're really struggling or try ibuprofen gel if you'd rather not take the tablets.

Agree with get a proper diagnosis. Have an ultrasound and then decide with gp/physio on treatment. I had shoulder bursitis (diagnosed by scan) and found cortisone jab helped enough so I could do resistance exercises on the tendons. You can do permanent damage to joints with a misdiagnosis - good luck.

theleavesfall24 · 28/12/2023 10:40

@delilabell how were you diagnosed?

I have seen a GP and she got me to do the following and then made a diagnosis...
Squat
Lie down raise legs
Touch toes

None caused any severe pain but was stiff...

She then pressed around my hip area and back. Then said it was hip bursitis.

But I am going to ask for an ultrasound.

Mine has been hanging around for about 5 years. Exercise made it much worse - I had to stop physio - that made it much worse - they were not gentle enough and it flared - don't sleep on that side, don't take long car journeys, very gentle walking and a massage gun have helped - it really has been a nightmare - I can walk normal pace now but any time I do something a little bit more - I am in agony.

garlictwist · 28/12/2023 10:49

I had what I thought was bursitis but it turned out to be a hip labral tear. Bursitis is often misidiagnosed and if you are feeling pain in your lower back and other areas it could well be something else, especially if caused through trauma.

theleavesfall24 · 29/12/2023 09:12

@garlictwist oh that sounds painful! How did it resolve?

I must say a warm bath each night has really helped ease it. I even went for a longer walk yesterday and seemed fine.
I have taken an anti inflammatory last few days as it was sore.
Lower back is more aches - like my back is stiff.

I've been diagnosed with that. I was fine walking etc, was more painful at rest and especially in bed. It was more like a constant nagging dull throb rather than an agonsing pain although in bed I couldn't lay on my side as that did hurt.

I had a cortisone injection, instant relief. Has this been suggested?

Unprecedentedusername · 29/12/2023 10:49

I had this. GP recommended seeing a sports physio which I did privately. Was about £50 per session for what felt like excruciating massage. Had 3 sessions over 3 weeks and it disappeared. Have had no recurrence since. It was the massage that was effective as I didn’t get round to doing the exercises.

Potentialmadcatlady · 29/12/2023 10:51

I had it… sadly the only thing that helped it go away was rest and no over use which is v hard!! Running was out.. long walks out.. but it did go away and only flares up now if I overuse my hip..

jannier · 29/12/2023 11:10

I've had 3 cortisone injections in mine over the years, the middle one didn't work well. Sitting still made it worse and laying on it wasn't possible. I now manage it by regular deep massage....hurts but helps disperse the fluid and acupuncture every time I feel it start.

@Potentialmadcatlady how long did it take to go away

Oh a good six months maybe nine…. So sadly a long time

soupfiend · 17/01/2025 20:22

I have it in my foot diagnosed by ultrasound, and/or a touch of arthritis

Was sent for physio and she did some sort of red light intense thing on it, cant remember the name of it

It really helped, that was last year and now its back again affecting my walking

It feels like my foot is massive, swollen and stiff.

Deedoo · 18/01/2025 07:19

@garlictwist hie long did it take to heal
