What's it like living in Warrington?

I know nothing about the town and area and would love your thoughts and experiences.

It's alright, just like every other town IMO. I prefer it to Wigan or Bolton. Good train links, 20 mins to Manchester or Liverpool. Great Motorway network to N/S/E/W. Nice villages in the south, Lymm / Appleton / Stockton Heath. Within 1hr15 you could be in the Lake District/ Peak District or Snowdonia.
The bus network is not the best and car travel in the town centre can be bad at peak times (like most towns). Lots of industry growth in big business parks like Omega and Birchwood. Ikea is a big draw from surrounding towns.

What are you looking for?

Mintygoodness · 28/12/2023 03:59

Does it have a lively high street and inner core or has that area died like sadly many towns?

The town centre is much quieter shop wise than it used to be, like most places but they've just built a brand new market hall, market food court and cinema in the centre. I find the town centre and surrounding retail parks to have a really good selection of shops and I can't think of a store that is missing, maybe John Lewis?

That sounds good, I know a family moving there so it made me curious.

@Ambi has listed all the positives. I like it a lot but just be aware, most schools are bursting at the seams. If the family you know have children, they are unlikely to get their first choice of school place.

They homeschool and are moving to join a homeschooling co-op and part time school.

It’s actually pretty nice. Sure there are rough parts and the town centre isn’t amazing. But there are little suburbs like Stockton Heath that are thriving villages with shops and bars and restaurants. It’s also close enough to beautiful countryside for walks. Has excellent schools and affordable housing.

Mintygoodness · 28/12/2023 08:44

Thank you for your input, good to know its affordable for families.

Diverse. Some parts are rough as heck, other parts are really very fancy indeed. Loads of facilities, more supermarkets than you can shake a stick at 😄 lots of shops, restaurants, bars, gyms, great access to Liverpool & Manchester. Traffic is horrific. It has pretty much everything you need, and they really are trying to make the grotty bits better. I've been here 20+ years and honestly love it.

I used to work there but wouldn’t want to live there. Maybe I’m too suburban but for me it’s neither Manchester nor Liverpool and always feels like a motorway interchange. If you like roundabouts you’ll love it!

Fairylightfurore · 28/12/2023 08:56

It's really rough. Town centre seems run down. I wouldn't choose to live there op.

That's interesting I live in Bolton and the town centre is bloody awful
I wish our council.would do the same !

BoPeepsSheep · 28/12/2023 10:09

I used to live there, still visit.

like any towns, it’s a mix. The town centre is rubbish IMO. Had a large new shopping centre built around 2007 but lots of the units are now empty, including Debenhams/M&S.

Main shopping street was always Bridge Street but that’s v run down now.

The council have overhauled the market and built a cinema opposite, all good for teenagers to visit. They’ve also created a ‘cultural quarter’ with some lovely restaurants, and they’ve done a good job of that.

Excellent motorway links, airports either side at Liverpool and Manchester. Train runs north to Scotland and south to London (1hr 45m to London). Also runs east/west serving Liverpool and Manchester/beyond.

Some rough areas, but not as rough as you’d find in a big city. Some very lovely areas on the outskirts, particularly in the south of the town - though plans to build on some of the green belt. Large Hong Kong population in recent years, many of who have (for some reason) settled in the Westbrook area, which has inflated house prices in that suburb despite it really not being one of the best suburbs.

large IKEA and Marks and Spencer in the north of the town.

I'm from Warrington originally, lived away for over 20 years but family still here and visit a lot. Currently here for an Xmas visit.

I agree with BoPeep entirely. There are good bits, the new market, the old fish market, Palmyra Square etc are nice now. Bridge St run down but that's been the case for years. It's not a tourist destination, you wouldn't visit for the fun of it but (I think) it's easy to live in as a normal town.

There's a lot to do and a lot going on. There are areas of vibrancy and pockets of deprivation.
