I started with a Team Bodyproject video on Youtube. From past experience (I was really really unfit) it needed to be for beginners, low impact and knee friendly.

First time was so hopeless I skipped most of it and needed to lie on the floor for 20 minutes in the middle.

A year on, I subscribe to their website, workout most days except have been bad over Christmas and am a million times fitter than I was before.

Do not look at what others think is the 'best' exercise.
Try a few things and see what you enjoy.
If you don't enjoy it you'll be done before January is.

PlipPlopChoo · 27/12/2023 22:10

Enjoyment is the most important factor when first getting started. The route to getting the results you want is to 'keep turning up' rather than finding what might be considered a perfect routine.

Try a few different things and carry on with what you enjoy the most. Perhaps even go for several different exercise activities rotated during the course of the month.

Overtraining is also something to avoid. There is no reason to be training more than 2 or 3 times a week at the outset. You need to be hungry to hit each session hard rather than still feeling the aches from the previous workout.

Are you menopausal OP?

DingDongMerrilyWithPie · 27/12/2023 22:12

If menopausal weights are very good. Need to avoid inflammation so endless cardio sometimes not helpful

cardibach · 27/12/2023 22:24

If finances in any way allow, a personal trainer. I need the accountability as well as the knowledge.

Beansandcheesearegood · 27/12/2023 22:49

Thanks all @DingDongMerrilyWithPie I'm peri and weight is starting to add up!

I started with spin, because I wanted to get fitter fast and not fuck my knees in the process….
Then added on body pump until I could manage proper weights in the gym.

But I love all of that, so it’s sustainable.

Agree with PP, best exercise is whatever you like and will consistently do.

ReflectiveRogue1001 · 28/12/2023 00:11

Agree with others, you need to find what works for you.
You don't have to love it,but you have to not hate it enough to stop you going.
And you do need to be committed and prioritise it.
So no "yes, I'm a good swimmer, so swimming works for me, but I hate getting wet and smelling of chlorine, so...." (or whatever).

As a regular exerciser, I'll tell you that every class is stuffed full in January of people telling you just how determined they are.

Most don't last 3 weeks.

Actually, most don't last 3 sessions.

Ah, weights so and cardio for health. Increase protein intake.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/12/2023 09:45

I'm 53, started small group CrossFit type training 6 months ago. Love it, have stuck to it and feel 1000 times better for it.

Iwasdrunkandamenace · 28/12/2023 10:22

I love the January influx of people in new work out gear…it always makes me aware of what the current gym fashion is , and how uncool I am.

I love the determination and hope the January people bring.

I also love when they disappear off again and the classes are quieter.
