How often do you redecorate?

I want to repaint our living room. DH is horrified as we had it done in neutral tones following a huge remodel in Dec 2020. I went neutral as we had a newborn and colours felt too big a choice with so much change and now I fancy colours.

I don’t disagree with him that 3ish years seems soon, but he qualified it with ‘my parents haven’t redecorated in 47 years’!! I am sure there’s some more general practice between 3/47 years so curious to see what the consensus might be….

My kitchen and bathrooms have been painted a few times but the living room has just been redone for the first time in 15years and the main bedroom hasn’t been done in that time.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 27/12/2023 12:56

I redo at least 1 room every year to keep on top of it so i never have a huge job of the whole house. So each room gets redone every 3ish years

greentreez23 · 27/12/2023 12:58

Every ten years approximately

I think it depends on what you are doing, if it’s a lick of paint, or full on sanding skirting, replacing carpets etc.

autumn1610 · 27/12/2023 13:00

I would say 3-5years for living room and main bedroom. Would leave hall, bathroom, spare rooms longer

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/12/2023 13:00

We've lived in this house 9 years and started gradually redecorating all the rooms not long after we bought the house, including eventually having a new kitchen and two new bathrooms. I think the last room we did was in 2020. I have no immediate plans to start redecorating the ones we did 7 or 8 years ago!

UsingChangeofName · 27/12/2023 13:23

I try to keep on top of things and do one room a year, so it cycles round generally as 8 - 10 years, but does vary a bit, depending on other factors.

bloatedbobby · 27/12/2023 13:24

I reckon 8-10 yrs is the norm

bloatedbobby · 27/12/2023 13:24

longer for kitchens & bathrooms 🚽

dudsville · 27/12/2023 13:28

If it's just one room then I would be slightly more willing. I chose a colour for the whole house, so all I have to do is either clean the odd mark or repaints the odd section to keep it looking smart. I prefer the ease of this to the beauty of a new colour. I have a friend who prefers the beauty of a new colour and I enjoy see her changes.

slowfrogs · 27/12/2023 13:42

We lived in our old property for 10 years - it was repainted and had new flooring once when we first moved, then repainted after we moved to sell it. So 10 years. We moved into a new house with a baby and I won't redecorate until the baby is in preschool (no other childcare). Then we wouldn't plan to do it again until DCs are teens. I just couldn't face the hassle and mess of it all. One room a year sounds like a good idea.

Wristfolds · 27/12/2023 14:06

So it would just be the walls I’m planning on doing, not floors or new curtains etc.

Sounds like I might be being a bit hasty, perhaps I’ll just leave my now toddler unattended with some Spag Bol or crayons if I really want to push this 😉

Why don't you add colour with your accessories instead of redecorating? A colourful rug, some bright cushions and some pictures on the wall should almost make it look like a different room! And they are easy to change when you want something different.

Wristfolds · 27/12/2023 21:39

We have a mustard sofa/curtains and a blue sofa. Bamboo flooring and a big textured white rug. I’m thinking dark green walls with a thick white picture tail and a salmon pink mirror/pic frame would make it all pop…

In 4 years
Kichen paint. Then re fit. Then paint then freshened.
Lounge, painted 2x
Bedroom wallpapered.
Hall painted twice
Bathroom glossed once. Rest is all tiled
Kids rooms both painted twice
Conservatory painted twice

Kitchen needs a freshen again. Same color though

BrainInAJar · 27/12/2023 21:44

I had my whole flat professionally painted in shades of white about 15 years ago when I bought it.

I don't see redecorating featuring in my future much if at all! (But I don't have kids)

Wristfolds · 27/12/2023 21:46

Oh wow @ChilledToTheBone are you married to/a decorator or just super handy?! You put me to shame!

Did you do a full restyle or just freshen up?

RosesAndHellebores · 27/12/2023 21:48

Always neutral/7-10 years depending on use.

MIL and FIL decorated their house shortly after they bought it. In 1960! >>whispers gently<< It shows. Lime green dining room, red velvet curtains in the living room (BIL painted over the patterned, textured wallpaper in 2008), rose pink in the master bedroom. The kitchen in off white and China blue. (China blue cupboard doors and drawer fronts, which surrounds), swirly carpet and black and white yellow floor tiles in the hall, Thomas Crapper in the lavatory. It is the house that time forgot.

Wristfolds · 27/12/2023 21:50

@RosesAndHellebores my in laws have also never redecorated but went for all grey shades in the 70’s so it looks vaguely hinch inspired now…

Mainly just freshen except the wallpaper in bedroom in lockdown.
Everything else just paint walls and gloss
. I do it myself DH is useless.

Kitchen was fitted by professionals though. Im not that brave.

When we moved in everything was eggshell and grubby.
I cleaned and painted neutral but as time went on i changed colors plus we needed all new furniture so did room by room.

Im kind of a bit sad now I have no big projects or anything needing doing.

TheChosenTwo · 27/12/2023 21:55

We do everything every other year so every 2 years. Usually keep the same colours and everything is just freshened up. It’s usually the dc who might go for a change of colour.
Always plan for it to be done when we’re on our big summer holiday as we have 2 sets of stairs and quite high ceilings so they need scaffolding and it’s just easier if we are out of the way completely.
Our house has very heavy traffic and we have rebuilt the entire while living here - we’re really houseproud (it’s NOT an immaculate showhome 😂😂😂) and like to keep on top of all the little jobs or else they become big jobs before long.

Ponderingwindow · 27/12/2023 21:58

I replace things when they are worn out. I don’t redecorate just because I want a change.

I currently need to redo the paint in the living room, but I’m waiting just a bit because the carpet isn’t quite ready to replace and I would like more freedom in choosing colors by replacing both at once.

Ambi · 27/12/2023 22:19

About 10yrs I think. We were in our old home 15yrs and decorated everything once but the living room twice (I went too dark on the neutral taupe and DH hated it, the big flowered wallpapered chimney breast looked extremely dated too).
