There’s a mouse in my Christmas tree!

Was removing a humane trap from the loft and I dropped it - it opened and a very cute little mouse has shot up the Christmas tree.
The tree is large with lovely dense foliage, or at least it was an hour ago. Teen DSes are being brilliant. We keep spotting the mouse with our torches but cannot catch it. What to do?

Reset the humane trap. You will catch it again.

LuluBlakey1 · 27/12/2023 00:00

Bait the humane trap and put it in the tree. It will catch it again and you can take it outside and let it go.

Have put two humane traps with chocolate in the tree. Am worried the mouse will escape elsewhere in the house

Disconnect the lights.

Reset the trap with chocolate.

It will come down when you leave it be - you are very unlikely to catch it

It’s a very sweet image though..,

It’s shot onto the floor twice and then back up the tree as we tried to catch it in boxes. It’s so fast! We’ve been hunting it for well over an hour. I’m so tired

That's actually pretty cute. I'd unplug the Christmas lights though. Re set the trap and let the mouse go somewhere away from the house.

reallyneedmoresleep · 27/12/2023 00:16

Oh my wonderful sons! They caught it in a heroes box. We put it in a bigger box outside and then moved it 400 metres down our country road. Thanks for support!

You realise it's going to come back don't you? Never mind,it's very cute

mellysnowdrop · 27/12/2023 00:52

Isn't that adorable. I'm so glad you used humane traps too.

Why will it come back? 400 metres?
Have sometimes wondered about this - how far away should you drop a mouse?
(Must admit I once put one on my front lawn - probably daft)
That looks like rather a big mouse to me by the way - been at the chocs?

Greenshake · 27/12/2023 00:54

That picture is lovely, I hope he got the Crunchie ❤️

Josette77 · 27/12/2023 01:29

This my favourite post ever!!!

Do cute and sweet.

Op you made my Christmas!

LittleGreenDragons · 27/12/2023 01:32

You were supposed to set the trap with ONE chocolate, not the whole box!! 😱

The mouse is very cute though (and a lovely Christmas story for the next few years).

Humane traps are actually anything but.

Humane traps are actually anything but.

Why? Don't you just release the mouse from it?

Humane traps are actually anything but.

Also interested to know this? As long as they aren't in there for more than 20 mins (ideally you let them out straight away) why aren't they humane?

Pigglycat · 27/12/2023 09:58

I had a genius idea some years ago that has enabled me to safely catch the mice my cat used to bring in.

You need a kitchen roll. Remove the paper (since you're in a hurry) and take out the tube. Cover one end with paper and sellotape it in place. You can then offer the open end to the mice from a distance if it gets into a corner or small space. Mice will normally run into what looks to them like a safe space. You can then cover the open end with your hand and take the tube outside to some safe foliage. Set it down and leave, and the mouse will emerge when it feels safe 👍

That picture has to be next year's Christmas card

Oh I absolutely love this! Our cat brings them
In regularly, and we always try to save them before she gets her teeth into them. I'm going to save the next kitchen roll tube in the kitchen for exactly this!! 👏👏

I'm so glad you're going to try it ❤️ It really is life-changing for those of us with hunting cats 😁

Humane traps are actually anything but.

Pest controllers use big snap traps and call them humane traps. Presumably because they kill the victim quickly.

An actual humane trap is a little tunnel with a one way door that contains the mouse until it can be moved elsewhere.

The first is not humane, the second is.
