Why are duvet sets with zips so rare?

Got a great duvet set from Lidl with zip closure, both for the duvet cover and the pillow cases. I love it. But they are uncommon in shops, which I don't understand as they are clearly far superior to buttons. What am I missing?

Harder to sew in neatly? The longer the zip, the harder it is to make it lie flat, so a neat finish is more difficult.

Kpo58 · 26/12/2023 17:59

Poppers are superior to both.

If part of a zip breaks then the entire zip no longer works. Buttons are crap too as they are awkward to put together and liable to break off if your toes get caught in them.

I got a Dunelm Xmas duvet set and both duvet and pillows had zippers

They are horrible and scratchy and liable to break.

My mum as just very excitedly tellimg me how she managed to get one! She missed them

Very normal in Germany and Switzerland. Lidle is a German company....

I've had two sets and they've both broken. And then they're a pain to fix. Gone back to buttons.

We use two single duvets on our king size bed, so maybe this is a factor

I bought a set from M and S that has a zip, never had one before and really like it...hate diddling with buttons and poppers

uclpp · 26/12/2023 18:18

I have a zipped one from ikea
not all of theirs are zipped though

They don't last anywhere near as long as they can't be repaired as easily so they contribute to fast furnishings, a disturbing trend that seems to get worse every year.
Poppers or buttons can be repaired if they break, and are less likely to break.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 26/12/2023 18:20

It’s a manufacturer cost thing. Buttons are cheapest, then poppers, then zips

Definitelylivedin · 26/12/2023 18:21

Much more expensive to manufacture. Buttons are cheap and easy to install, long zips cost quite a bit and would be a more skilled job to install.

Are poppers easy to replace? I have no idea how to.

Get a Coverless duvet, no zips or poppers required. Genuinely my least favourite chore, so these have been life changing for me

festivepains · 26/12/2023 21:22

It's so if a child gets in one they can get out easily without being zipped into a duvet.

ExpensiveDecorations · 26/12/2023 21:29

Poppers are very easy to replace, yes. Buttons also though you need to match the size. With a popper you replace both halves. With either the odd one broken or missing doesn't make much difference though.

How can you curl the duvet up between your feet with a zip 😱
