…with a 7 year old.

How would you spend it?

OP posts:
Mumaway · 26/12/2023 15:24

Eurodisney, or whatever it's called now

ZZGirl · 26/12/2023 15:30

Disneyland
Get day tickets online. Very easy to get to from central paris

Gettincoldouthere · 26/12/2023 15:34

So many beautiful things to experience in Paris. I wouldn’t waste it in Disneyland.

Escalator to the top of the Pompidou, boat ride along the Seine, hire a bike and cycle along the Seine, walk in Montmartre, eat crepes and visit the bakeries, stair to the top of Arc du Triomohe, Eiffel Tower is fun.

ParisILoveYou · 26/12/2023 15:41

Here you go OP ...

Beaubourg / Centre Pompidou - it will be closing for 5 years to be cleaned after The Olympics. Fabulous views going up the escalators and on the roof and just a wonderful space for play, art, films and the most amazing bookshop!

Right next to Beaubourg/Centre Pompidou you have The Stravinsky Fountain and the fabulous Niki de Saint Phalle sculptures. Much fun.

Lunch at La Dame Tartine which is opposite The Stravinsky Fountain.

Enjoy!

And if you have the time I would take a BATEAUX MOUCHE, take snacks, baguette, cheese, hams, wine (for you obvsiously), juice ... and you must both sit at the front of the bateau too!

www.bateaux-mouches.fr

And@Gettincoldouthere has the best ideas too!

Oh def don't waste precious time in eurodisney! There's so much to see & do in Paris! Some great ideas here already.

I recommend the batobus, eiffel tower, patisseries, Jardin du Luxembourg- the oldest merry-go-round in Europe is there

You'll easily fill a day with amazing sights & experiences

LittleGlowingOblong · 26/12/2023 16:15

Oh, I’m glad I asked on here! Some fab suggestions.

I’m sure my child would LOVE EuroDisney, but I think I’ll keep completely quiet on that subject. They don’t know it exists.

After Christmas, and travels in January, low cost or free options are the most welcome.

I’ll check out the blog now. I’ll also make some plans according to whether it’s rainy or dry.

Thanks everyone!

FIVE YEARS?

MargotBamborough · 26/12/2023 16:17

Some great suggestions here but I would do the Tour Montparnasse or climb the Arc de Triomphe instead of the Eiffel Tower.

LittleGlowingOblong · 26/12/2023 16:27

I’m minded to try and follow the itinerary in the blog, and also squeeze in the Centre Pompidou area. And early start! We’re staying not far from the Gare de Lyon (and we do also have a couple hours the next morning).

If you book the bus tour that includes lunch in the Eiffel Tower and the boat ride, you don't have to queue for the tower, you go straight in and up to the restaurant. Once you have had lunch you can buy a ticket to go up to the next level. You can do your boat ride much later in the evening, just check the times, it is beautiful all lit up. The time between leaving the tower and doing the boat ride is when you can fit in visits elsewhere. We did some shopping and went to the Louvre, but you could do anything. Do check whether you can still buy paper tickets for the metro, I know they are in the process of moving to an app. You need an extra document for travel now, since Brexit, I can't remember what it is called but it costs about 7Euros.

Incongruance · 26/12/2023 16:44

There are pickpockets everywhere and mobile phone theft from restaurant tables is very common.

Cherrysoup · 26/12/2023 16:54

Eiffel Tower, Beaubourg, walk to Forum des Halles, Catacombs if your dc wouldn’t freak out.

LittleGlowingOblong · 26/12/2023 18:11

I’m not sure I want to spend too much time on the Eiffel Tower, but doing the bateau mouche after dark / at dusk is a nice idea.

I’ve not been to Paris for ten years! I’d be interested to see what Nôtre Dame looks like now (I guess I could Google Image!), and also what Anne Hidalgo has done for the city in terms of cycling, greening, etc.

Yep!

Re : Centre Pompidou / Beaubourg Closure

It was meant to be this year but the dates have been changing as they wanted it ready for the 50th Anniversary in 2027 but now I understand it will be after The Olympics ... so go before they close it!

Centre Pompidou / Beaubourg to close for 5 years for refurbishment

Paris: Centre Pompidou confirms five-year closure from 2025

The world-famous art museum will shut its doors for a major refurbishment to 'enable its survival,' announced the French culture minister.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 26/12/2023 19:41

@Incongruance we spent a month in paris this year. Never had anything pickpocketed or stolen from our table. Every big city has pickpockets - London, Barcelona etc. But we certainly didn't experience Paris to be any worse than other places.

crackofdoom · 26/12/2023 19:54

If you did the Bateau Mouche in the evening you could catch the Eiffel Tower all lit up and sparkly (on the hour, every hour). That would also cross off the insistence on "seeing" the Eiffel Tower, if there is one. I wouldn't actually go to the Eiffel Tower itself, there are far nicer bits of Paris.
Perhaps Montmartre? You can come out at Abbesses metro with its classic Guimard entrance, walk along the road, then take a funicular to the foot of Sacre Coeur. Feels very pretty and Parisian (shouldn't be too crowded in January) yet compact. Lovely views, including- yes- the Eiffel Tower, if you walk around the hill to the right a bit.
The Ile de la Cite is also lovely, compact, full of all kinds of interesting things, and right in the centre of the city (you can also get a sightseeing boat from there- the Vedettes du Pont Neuf). Obviously Notre Dame is a no no right now, but there are some really interesting illustrations on the hoardings showing the rebuilding work. And you could cross over the bridge to the Ile St Louis for ice cream at Berthillon, or over to the Left Bank to check out the childrens' books at Shakespeare and Co.
The Jardin des Plantes is just the other side of the river from the Gare de Lyon- it's my favourite park in Paris.

crackofdoom · 26/12/2023 19:57

Just seen your update. If you're interested in the "new" Paris, you could follow the Canal St Martin north from Republique? It's got a really nice feel nowadays.

crumpet · 26/12/2023 19:59

Book advance tickets to the Eiffel Tower so you skip the queues. It is so unique, and then you have the pleasure of seeing it for the rest of the day as you travel around Paris.

crumpet · 26/12/2023 20:00

For years every time your dc see a picture of Paris it will include the Eiffel Tower and they can say they have been up it
