Turkey crown 1.82kg. I've thrown the packaging away and can't remember what it said, I'm sure it was 2 hours 29, does this sound about right?

Help!

70 minutes per kilo, plus 20 mins.

Internal temp needs to be min 70 degrees.

Azandme · 26/12/2023 09:23

2 hours 29 is about right.

I just checked a calculator online and that says 1 hour 46? Hmm

Turkey crowns are similar cooking wise to chickens so that sounds about right to me! Check it after and if juices run clear it's cooked!

I'd go 2h 10 mins at 170 fan, oiled, seasoned and covered except for the last 30 mins. Then cover and rest it for 30 mins before serving.
You can cook it faster but the outside is more likely to dry out before the middle is fully cooked.

Ahhh I'm confused now! Why would the packaging say over 2 hours something if that would be too long? I don't want dry turkey 😫

My turkey crown was 3.9kg.
Cooked for 3 hours at 180 deg, as recommended.
Was perfect.

MadeForThis · 26/12/2023 09:59

Our turkey crown was 2.7kg and cooked for 2hrs 5 mins. Perfect

Foil for the first 60 mins
Turn over for the last 30 mins.

Same here for weight and times.

OP, yours would be overcooked in 2 hours!

My turkey yesterday was 4.5kg. It said 3hr 20min on packaging but I took out to rest after 2hr 45min once juices were clear. Was just right after resting an hour while I waited for veg. Not dry but fully cooked. I definitely think packaging times are too long on turkeys.

Snackpocket · 26/12/2023 10:14

My turkey crown was 2kg and packaging said 2hrs27. It probably could have had a little less time but was still tasty!

redcar28 · 26/12/2023 10:32

It's been cooking for almost 1 hour 40 so far, I'm going to take the foil off soon as it's still nowhere near crispy or brown whatsoever

And to be honest my oven isn't great and things usually do take a bit longer to cook!

Top tip for the future: a cheap meat thermometer is your friend. Get one where you can set an internal temp (slightly lower than you want because it’ll keep cooking while it rests) bung in oven and it will beep at you when it is hot enough.

Works for more than just turkey once a year.

They tend to get to the required temperature quicker than the timings suggest. So you get moister meat.

redcar28 · 26/12/2023 10:38

@StragglyTinsel I've been meaning to buy one of those for ages but keep putting it off, definitely be my next purchase!

The packaging and the supermarkets always suggest much longer times than you need. They are paranoid about these things so their recommendations are much longer than you need. If you follow the cooking time on the packaging it will be over done and dry.

MaMisled · 26/12/2023 10:44

My packaging yesterday said 20 mins per kg plus 90 mins.

redcar28 · 26/12/2023 12:38

I took it out a while ago to let it rest and I still don't know if it's cooked 😩 the juices are clear so I assume so? I cut a little bit off the side and it had the slightest pink tinge?
