Mirena Coil before and after

IHateLegDay · 25/12/2023 22:12

Posting here for traffic!

I recently had the mirena coil removed as I'd have horrendous PMS (insane feelings of anger) but then would have v light spotting for a few days so the PMS wouldn't go.
I decided to get it removed to see if my mood improved and it has but the bleeding is absolutely ridiculous. I forgot how heavy it used to get when AF came.

I'm now having to decide what I'd prefer, heavy and painful bleeding for 2 weeks a month or feeling irate 24/7.

Has anyone gone back to the coil after having it removed or does anyone have suggestions?

How old are you?

annahay · 26/12/2023 08:38

My first few cycles after I had the coil removed were really heavy. It settled down though.

UntamedShrew · 26/12/2023 08:49

I’ve recently been prescribed tranaxemix acid to reduce blood loss as my periods were making me anaemic. It’s been life changing for me - could be worth a try? I don’t know why it isn’t routinely offered to women with heavy periods.

I’m considering having mine removed as I feel as though my moods are really being affected. I get really quite down and teary for about a week.
However, my periods beforehand were awfully heavy, so I too am weighing up the pros and cons.

That's really good to hear! Did you previously have heavy periods before you went on the coil?
I've referred to mine as tsunamis as they've always been ridiculously heavy. The mirena was a godsend in terms of bleeding but my moods are awful.

I was prescribed a few years ago when I was regularly flooding but I don't think I gave them a proper go. Do they stop your periods or just lighten them?

For me any of the side effects are worth it compared to how my periods are.

People say that periods shouldn’t be debilitating/very heavy with flooding but mine are and were from day 1!

not sure when you had yours removed but the ‘withdrawl’ bleed is very very heavy in my experience. I couldn’t actually leave the house.

This is exactly my problem except mine is more anger. I feel depressed as well but I'm easily irritated and snappy at everyone.
It's a horrible feeling but I'm 2 weeks post coil removal and it's all come flooding back (quite literally).

I had my coil removed back in May at the same time I had a laparoscopy for endometriosis (number 5). I wouldn't say my periods have been any heavier than they were previously but my cycle went from previously being 28 days (pre coil) to 21 days so I was literally having one normal week, one week of terrible PMS and one of terrible pain... so I've gone back on the mini pill instead. I did want another coil but the last one had to be inserted under general anaesthetic and didn't want to go through that again!

annahay · 26/12/2023 19:18

@IHateLegDay yes, they were awful before. Really heavy and very very painful both during my period and mid cycle.

That's what I'm starting to think. With my terrible moods, at least I'm still functional.
With the bleeding, I'm not.

I had the coil removed just over 2 weeks ago. I had a few days of mild/moderate bleeding, a few days of nothing and now 8 days of gushing blood. I'm constantly in pain and uncomfortable.

Omg that's awful!! How's the mini pill working for you? I tried it when I was 19 and I bled lightly but daily for months so came off it.

@IHateLegDay I'm only on day three so haven't had chance to test it out yet. They did offer me a coil again and claimed it wouldn't be that bad putting it in in the clinic but I refused. I'm limited what I can have due to increased risk of cancer but I'd avoided the pill again so far due to being 38 and in case I wanted to get pregnant fairly quickly...

Since coming off the coil are your periods less heavy than they were or have they gone back to how they were?
I honestly have no idea what the best path for me to take is so trying to get as much information as possible 😂

I had my coil fitted under GA as well but I'm going to do it in clinic if I have it redone. I'm thinking I'll just grit my teeth and hope for the best 😂🙈

InAMess2023 · 26/12/2023 19:35

@IHateLegDay good luck! I have a ridiculously high pain threshold so felt a bit stupid insisting on a GA! But not sure my body would cooperate otherwise. It might be easier for you as you've had kids already, they always say that can help.

Cricketbelle · 26/12/2023 19:38

Might be worth seeing your GP (if you can get an appointment 🙄) to ask about alternatives.
Tranexemic tablets as mentioned previously or an surgical ablation?

I can recommend Starflower Oil (Borage oil) for period pain and PMT symptoms. You need to take it very day of the month. It’s amazing stuff.

drowningintinsel · 26/12/2023 19:44

I had a coil in and it was amazing. No periods, good skin. But I was very flat. I had no sex drive, I felt like I was just existing. I wasn't depressed but I just got on with stuff without much emotion. I've been more like myself since I've had it out but my periods aren't heavy anyway.

Just lighter. But like a tenth of usual blood losss

UntamedShrew · 26/12/2023 20:10

I don’t know how to do the quote reply thing sorry! But in reply to the post about uterine ablation - interesting, thank you…
