I was 21, I don't remember how long it took me.

It's never too late to learn to drive!

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 26/12/2023 05:30

Took a few months.

But it was easier back then. No theory test or anything and I think the practical test is much harder now.

FindingMeno · 26/12/2023 05:42

About 20, funded by myself.
I've never actually used my licence though as it scares me.
Mum learnt in her 30's and was a good competent driver.
So age isn't necessarily a factor!

Aposterhasnoname · 26/12/2023 05:55

Started learning at about 21, failed my test five times so gave up. Restarted at 38 and passed on the second attempt.

AvengedQuince · 26/12/2023 06:07

Started learning at 16, passed at 17 (had to be 16 to learn and 17 to pass).

GreatGateauxsby · 26/12/2023 06:07

I learned basics by 14/5 ( due to farming lifestyle) passed at 19/20.

My DHs parents didn't bother to encourage it.
He then lived in cities.
I made him start learning when we got serious dating, he was resistant, complainy and slow.
so despite having over a year to get it done he messed about with bits of lessons....then pandemic arrived. 😡

He just just passed at 33 (4th attempt?!!!) He is a good driver but a perfectionist and can be V anxious.

My advice based on my DH's disastrous expensive and painful for all journey...

- Learn in an automatic, just do not bother with a manual
- Do a one week/10 day residential intensive course
- once you've passed the test do some follow up "P" lessons.
- make sure you own/have access to a car
- commit / make it a priority to build and maintain driving skills / confidence for the next couple of years by driving new routes/ motorways weekly

Daisychainsandglitter · 26/12/2023 06:13

I passed at 38 OP. Took me two years to learn in a manual. I drive an automatic and it's took a lot of the fear out of driving for me. I would never drive a manual again.
You can do it!

TerfTalking · 26/12/2023 06:17

Started just after turning 18, got 6 lessons for my gift. Passed the month before I turned 19 on second time.

driving now 38 years.

familyissues12345 · 26/12/2023 08:40

27 - I'd had lessons on and off for many years (just wasn't my thing), was on my third attempt to pass and found out I was pregnant with second day before test. Made me even more determined to pass!

Wish I'd got on with it sooner, DS1 passed at 17 and I was very jealous Grin. Love driving now!

Wooloohooloo · 26/12/2023 10:55

I had lessons from age 17 to 19, failed twice and gave up. Tried again at 36 and passed at 37. Wish I'd done it sooner.

I would try in a manual first if you haven't before. An automatic only licence does limit your options (particularly if you're on a limited budget).

Solongtoshort · 26/12/2023 11:06

Had lessons when l was 18, failed twice then started again at 35 and passed when l was 36. It’s never too late and your life opens up. Good luck

JustMaggie · 26/12/2023 13:20

I was 18 when I passed my test. I was then in a small accident and it completely destroyed my confidence. I didn't touch a steering wheel for another 15 years. I took some more lessons and passed again. I have no trouble driving now 🙂

Thatnameistaken · 26/12/2023 13:51

I was 35, learnt in an automatic. It completely changed my life.
We got lessons for my DD as soon as she was 17, it so hard being unable to drive in our area.
