Any doctors/nurses around?

Having never done any damage to a bone or joint before, I’m not really sure what to expect or whether it’s worth getting checked.

Went over on my ankle on Sat morning. Very very painful. Felt a pop and sore enough when it happened that I felt physically sick. That severe pain eased off within about 30 mins but it remained painful to walk on and painful to the touch. Not much in the way of swelling. No bruising.

By Sunday afternoon it had swollen and bruised a good bit. Swelling pretty much around my whole ankle (right round the back and over the top of my foot). Bruising (deep purple) mainly surrounding the ankle bone both on the inside and outside of my foot.

A bit more swollen and bruised today. Still painful but I can walk (with a limp). I can circle my ankle and move it in all directions. Just feels very bruised and very tight from swelling.

Should I be getting it checked? Everything I’ve read says that swelling and bruising coming up after a length of time would usually indicate soft tissue damage rather than any kind of fracture.

Sounds very like a sprain. I've always said sprains are more of a nuisance than fractures because people don't take care to make sure they heal well which can leave you with a lax joint.

I would get it checked out, you could have a fracture of the base of your fifth.

It sounds like a nasty injury… with that much swelling and bruising I would X-ray you to exclude fracture.
A nasty sprain can take longer to heal than a fracture!

Thanks all. Swelling has definitely gone down a good bit this morning but still feels very tight. Age old issue - I can’t afford to be off my feet so silently praying for a miracle 😬 Was hoping a good bit of rest for a few days would help. It’s definitely much better than it was but still not great.

I would get it checked out just to be on the safe side - contrary to popular believe, some ankle/foot fractures can be walked on still. In the meantime, regular pain relief, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation to help with the pain and swelling.

I've had the rather bad luck of spraining the same ankle twice in the past 10 or so years, pretty badly, both times the awful amount of pain and inability to hardly walk on it meant I had to be checked to make sure nothing more serious had happened (thankfully not!).

Even if yours is just a sprain, you're still going to need to take it easy with it so that you don't put yourself at risk of making it worse or causing yourself more issues with that ankle later on.

I'd get it checked. You might have cracked your fibula.

@Inyourwildestdreams

Please go and get this checked out. I did exactly what you did and it wasnt fractured, but a ruptured tendon that I then spent months in pain and seeing various doctors about. It then resulted in surgery.

The key is the "pop" which is more indicative of a tendon tear or rupture and is way more difficult to treat than a fracture. The longer you leave it, the more likely it results in surgery.

The pop would concern me. I’d get it checked as mentioned above. It does sound more like a strain that a break, but DP walked around on his broken leg for a day before he got it checked and they discovered the fracture.

Are you resting and elevating it? Are you taking ibuprofen?

hashbrownsandwich · 26/12/2023 08:32

Minor injuries.

Inyourwildestdreams · 26/12/2023 08:41

Thank you all. Yes, resting as much as is possible with a toddler running around, bar Sunday when I had to work 5 hours in the afternoon which obviously wasn’t ideal (I’m on my feet at work). Been elevating, using ice for short periods a few times a day as recommended, and taking ibuprofen.

No minor injuries here unfortunately. It’s A&E or normal GP which is closed until tomorrow. Doesn’t feel sore enough to be a A&E issue. But I’m due back at work on Thursday and DH leaves to go back to work tomorrow morning (works abroad) so it’s not the best timing really 🙈
