Looking for new ideas please 🙂
So far they’ve enjoyed:
The Hobbit
Treasure Island
The Railway Children
The Secret Garden
The Jill books

…and others I can’t remember now!

I’d really appreciate any ideas please! Classic books preferred over modern, and good stories. Nothing that’s too much of a morality tale or too sad.

Thank you!

The Tiffany Aching books? I loved reading them to my son when he was younger. Start with The Wee Free Men (and make sure to do the voices!)

Five Children and It - E Nesbitt
Phoenix and the Carpet - E Nesbitt
Jennie - Paul Gallico

The midnight folk and The box of delights.

It's hard to find things to suit both my DS10 and DD8 but they were both absolutely mesmerised by The Explorer and Impossible Creatures by Katharine Rundell. They got a couple more of hers for Christmas. (New but feel like classics.)

I'd also second the Tiffany Aching books (Wee Free Men is the first in the series).

And I know you said not modern but The Impossible Boy and the Marsh Road Mysteries series were really good if you do fancy something different.

The whole little house on the prairie series (but be prepared for some on-the-spot editing of some outdated language- I guess that's true for pretty most older books)

The Little Princess (although I had to skip over some of the saddest bits in the middle)

Psammead trilogy (five children and it)

Narnia stories other than just lion witch and wardrobe.

The Unmapped Chronicles - Abi Elphinstone. There’s about 5 in the series, I think. Rumblestar is the first one.
