Anyone else play? What’s the best way to become a better player?

I've played a couple of times with the kids but I was winging it as dungeon master.

I found dndbeyond.com really helpful for character creation.

Thank you! My son was dungeon master, he runs games in person and online. I really enjoyed it and everyone was very kind to me.

You'll get better with the mechanics/rules over time, the most important thing as a player is making the right choices for your character and role playing it really 😊(DM and player here!) Welcome to the hobby 😁

I’m happy to have found this thread! I (f, 40’s) just started playing last year. I play in an online campaign. I’ve found having physical spell-book (or spell cards) helpful prompts for me while I’m getting the hang of using magic (I’m a Halfling Rogue: Arcane Trickster so only been a spell-caster since L3. I’m only L5 now). It’s quite scribbled at the moment but my intention is to make neat/stylish versions of spellcards for spells/cantrips I use. An encouraging friendly group is also really important in my experience. I used to make a lot of notes when I first started but find I write less stuff down now (mainly just names and places or things we need to find etc). I have the Players Handbook but haven’t sat and read very much of it. Wishing you happy adventures.
