Damaged Christmas gift etiquette

I have been given a pashmina from an expensive shop as a Christmas gift. It was beautifully packaged in a gift bag from the shop but it has a series of pulled holes in the fabric along the same line.

I can definitely not tell the person who gave it to me and there’s no gift receipt. Shall I attempt to contact the store? I’m a little concerned that it might be a regifted present as the giver has form for this, which is fine as I do that too but I absolutely cannot tell her as if she has regifted it then I would hate to embarrass her/put her in a position where she’d feel she had to replace it at cost to her.

wwyd?

Can you repair/cover it in some way?

Yes I could probably try that, it just seems a shame if it is brand new!

No harm in contacting the store - they might exchange it from goodwill. If they don't, perhaps unpick the seam and resew beyond the damaged line.

Just contact the store, if it has the label and is packaged they might help. Otherwise you can either ask whether she still has the receipt, no worries if not as you can try and cover it (gives her a get out clause to say oh no, so sorry) or you could stitch a silk ribbon over it or something to cover the pulled area
