Do lots of MNers live in big houses?

Just curious as there are quite a few posters having people staying over Christmas.

Here it's just me and DH in a 3 bed semi so plenty of room for just us but only suitable for 1/2 guests in the spare room (box room is my office).

I live in Dublin (suburbs) and I always envisage Londoners living in the fabulous spacious houses from Outnumbered and Motherland (I know of course this is not the case)!

We have a spare double in the gym, spare bed in DS room and will put a spare double in my office. There could be an extra bed in DH office, but he doesn't want one. My grandparents used to have 4 in the living room, 4 in the spare bedroom and then their bedroom. Everyone just got on with it for a few days. It's about willingness to share rather than capability often. Someone who thinks they can't possibly have someone stay in an office or living room simply doesn't want them to stay very much.

JubileeJumps · 24/12/2023 13:13

I live in a 8 bedroom detached house and grew up in a two bedroom flat on the 4th floor of a block of eight. I only ever remember being happy in the flat and I’m happy here. As a kid I just thought everyone lived in a flat.

Glarptip · 24/12/2023 13:13

Yes, in exceptionally rural, very leafy areas full of craft butchers' shops.

OldTinHat · 24/12/2023 13:13

Three bedroom terrace here but two of the bedrooms just about fit a single bed and that's it. But I live alone so it doesn't matter!

CharlottePimpernel · 24/12/2023 13:19

Nope, one bed very small council flat with DD and dog.

gotomomo · 24/12/2023 13:21

I used to, I downsized following my divorce, we chose location over size, and it's perfect for 2 (once dc finally leave this summer!)

Comedycook · 24/12/2023 13:26

I consider my house to be big by London standards...large kitchen diner, two receptions, two bathrooms over three floors. We don't have a spare bedroom though so it's not easy to host overnight guests.

Godofwar · 24/12/2023 13:37

We have a five bed detached and only the three of us living here. I have a tiny family though through loss and some horrible circumstances so only have two extra guests at Christmas. I would LOVE a house full of family members at Christmas but I count the blessings I do have. 💖

USaYwHatNow · 24/12/2023 13:40

We live in a big ish house I guess...sold our 3 bed semi and moved into a 4 bed detached with 2 living rooms (one could be used as a bedroom and was marketed as a 5th bedroom/office). We could comfortably have 2 or 3 couples to stay over once the house is fully decorated/furnished, but it's currently a liveable renovation project 🤣

lemonjuicer · 24/12/2023 13:43

Grew up in a small 3 bed semi, 1 box room and the 2 others were small doubles, 1 bathroom/toilet only, my brother & I would have to sleep on mum & dad’s floor when we had guests, other guests would be in the lounge, it was absolutely fucking awful and not something I ever wish to recreate! I think people will make space if that’s the kind of Christmas they want.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 24/12/2023 13:43

We got 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, plus downstairs loo, 4 public rooms,
Breakfasting kitchen so yes reasonably big.

Got lucky in the housing boom of the early 00s and live in Scotland so sensible house prices.

Draconis · 24/12/2023 13:44

Same size house as yours op except we have a loft room too, kids have their own bedrooms but easily space for cousins to camp out in and we have a sofa bed in the living room.
We've had 6 people staying over once and there was shuffling of bedrooms and lots of air beds. Some people came with an air bed, duvet and pillow which also helped.

Spendonsend · 24/12/2023 13:49

Small 3 bed here. Its not comfortable for people to stay so they dont. Our guests are day visitors. We max out at 12 including us. Which we can seat uncomfortably around the kitchen table with extensions from trestles. our living space seats 6 comfortably, so the kids go up to the bedrooms even though they are adult sized. And me and dh dont sit down. Like maybe on the floor for a bit, blocking the door ways.

I think the overcrowding is just part of it.

deepsea9 · 24/12/2023 13:52

We live in 4 bed Victorian similar to Julia’s - kitchen hasn’t been done though so is quite small.

We have 3 house guests for Christmas plus the 5 of us who live here normally. Two DCs have given up their rooms and everyone is on a combination of air mattresses.

Our old place was a 3 bed and we would never have had the room to do the same there.

TKRedLemonade · 24/12/2023 13:59

Have 5 bed in Dublin but we all decamp to parents house (not in Dublin) on Christmas Eve, kids sleeping everywhere only adults guaranteed beds. Everyone loves it…..for 48 hours.

regularly have ppl in our spare room esp if going to airport etc but never more than 2 or three

Hooplahooping · 24/12/2023 14:00

We do live in a quite giant house by most standards - but that means everyone always comes to us… have 15 people here over Christmas. My youngest sister could absolutely upsize from her 1 bed flat if she wanted to but ‘if I get more space I’ll have to deal with all of you lot’… I think she’s on to something…

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/12/2023 14:00

I have a four bed and no kids, so plenty space for my partners family who are coming for a few days between Xmas and NY. I don’t have people to stay much though - I like my peace and quiet! Lol.

bakewellbride · 24/12/2023 14:01

2 kids and we are in a 3 bed 'normal' end of terrace house. I absolutely love our home but it's definitely nothing fancy and it could do with a new bathroom which we can't afford right now. One car too.

TheBestBitch · 24/12/2023 14:03

Yeah, we do. 5 double beds plus a 2 bed guest house so we can comfortably sleep 14. Large separate dining room, huge kitchen, over 4,000 sq feet. It means we often end up hosting but that’s fine.

RandomQuestionOfTheDay · 24/12/2023 14:03

We had 4 people to stay for a week in the summer. It was hideous. But technically as it’s a 4 bed house (and one DC has a large bedroom with a double bed) it was feasible with 2 DC in blow up beds (could have been on the sofa but I don’t want anyone drooling on my sofa cushions).

So to have loads of guests over Christmas you don’t need a massively huge 5+ bed house, you mostly just need to have a little extra space and be the kind of people who like having guests (hint: not me).

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 24/12/2023 14:05

My house isn't even big enough to host people for Christmas Dinner. Let alone have people sleep over!

Bugbeau · 24/12/2023 14:08

We live in a 60s end of terrace, just outside London. 2 double bedrooms and 2 singles (all small rooms though). The second double is a guest room/home office. The kids have the two singles. Downstairs is an open plan living/dining room & a small kitchen. We can and do host (last year had 11 for Xmas dinner, although only two extras stayed over), it was a squeeze but good fun.

FigTreeInEurope · 24/12/2023 14:09

I try to avoid the offspring returning, last year they chased the peecocks into the orangery, and jeeves had a frightful time chasing them around the billard room.

Wishimaywishimight · 24/12/2023 14:10

I'm very happy with my lot, more than enough space for the 2 of us but I am just (momentarily) a teeny bit envious of the 8 bed houses (would hate the extra cleaning but I guess if I could afford an 8 bed house I would have a cleaner 😁)

That sounds tiresome - poor Jeeves 🤣
