Going for job out of your reach

Has anybody ever gone for a job that could be out of their reach? I've seen one which would be a £30k pay rise (double current wage). I fit huge amounts of the job spec (not all). I could do lots of the job really, really well but others seem like a stretch. Should I just go for it? It seems like a big job but incredibly interesting and something I could throw myself into. I'm currently under utilised.

Misread your post as £30k wage not £30k rise. Anyway go for it, worst they can say is no and the feedback should give you a way to work towards it next time.

Give it a shot! Chances are there are very few people who would meet the criteria in its entirety. Does it give a list of 'must haves' (eg essential professional qualifications)? As long as you meet those and a good number of the others, it is worth a punt.

100% go for it! Women typically don’t apply for roles unless they feel they tick every single box. Whereas men apply when they only tick a small amount of the boxes!

Oh I would! So long as you meet any Essential criteria that could be legal requirements (professional qualifications etc) then there’s nothing stopping you except a possible. lack of confidence!

Undineimmor · 23/12/2023 17:13

Do it!!! Great experience and I am sure you aren't expecting much so you won't be disappointed

Doggymummar · 23/12/2023 17:15

Definitely, I got a job as a marketing director this year. Have never been in marketing it's just a years maternity cover but some extra skills to my bow and I'm doing well at it.

Apparently, in a job spec with 10 criteria, the average woman won't apply unless she meets at least 8 of them, whereas the average man will apply if he meets just two of them.

Go for it.

Wow. There are 9 criteria and I meet 7, maybe even 7.5 as I have some of another one.

Very true. It's not a local company so they won't know me so it won't make a difference if I fall flat on my face.

Do it! I did and got a similar pay rise and a whole new career out of it

Eeek. I think I'll go for it. It's a fixed term contract but could potentially open up new doors.

So was mine but the contract kept getting extended as I made myself indispensable. Do it! I'm cheering you on from the sidelines!

I just went from £52k to £75k. I want sure I could do it (new role is international and I had no experience of that)

4 weeks in all good I am confident I can do the job bigger company can offer a better wage and its a promotion but all fine.

Mine is a FTC too go for it!!

MsInterpret · 23/12/2023 18:32

Definitely go for it.

As PP said women tend to think they need to excel at every spec whereas really your description of doing lots of it and finding others a stretch sounds about right.

Good luck OP

Whoopitywhoops · 23/12/2023 18:41

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate it. I'm going to go for it. Worst that can happen is that I don't even hear back 🤷

If it's a contractor role that's even more do-able. They generally pay significantly more than permanent positions because you don't get things like sick leave and maternity leave. If you're undervalued in your current role and a permanent employee then if anything I'd apply for something slightly more senior too.
