Car insurance question

I'm sorting out my sons first insurance policy and it's horribly expensive and just a complete nightmare.

I thought I had it all sorted but think I may have made a mistake.

I have been put down as a named driver, I have no claims in my name but my husband had a claim on my policy as a named driver, he is not a named driver on my sons policy.

Do I need to declare this to my sons insurers?

I think you do. Ex was driving my car and had an accident as a named driver. I had to put it down on my insurance forms till it timed out as was my policy so my claim.

It's always been both of us on every other policy I've ever had to get quotes for so I wasn't sure. So we both have to declare it on every future policy and both gets increased premium, I fucking hate insurers at the moment.

It's going to make the cost even more astronomical 😫

I'd already forgotten about a windscreen claim I'd had and they still haven't told me what effect that will have on his premium, going to have to speak to them again

Called them, customer service advisor initially said oh no thats nothing to worry about, that doesn't have to be declared, I asked for that to be confirmed, after checking with a colleague she then advised it would have to be declared.

This is the strangest insurance company though, they cannot give me a straight answer as to whether the premium will increase or not, keep telling me the policy analysis team will have to look at it.

Windscreen claims don't normally have any impact on premiums. But your husbands accident t does need to be declared. The claim is against your policy doesn't matter that he is only a named driver, the policy belongs to you therefore it is your claim, you just weren't the driver.

MindHowYouGoes · 23/12/2023 17:01

The windscreen claim shouldn’t have affected your own insurance so it shouldn’t have any impact on your DS policy

Not every future policy. It stops needing to be declared after 5 years. I would say it had minimal effect on my policy cost just went up by about £30 a year. Might be different with a v. young driver.

I've read quite a lot of horror stories about this insurer which is what really got me thinking about this claim. A lot of people seem to say they wait until the 14 day cooling off period and then go through everything with a fine tooth comb and whack a load of fees on and load the premium.

I'll get some alternative quotes ready and if they can't give me straight answer within the 14 days will look to cancel, next cheapest quote was £100 more a month and needed a black box when I originally looked though

With our newly qualified drivers it was cheaper to use admiral multi car because of the discount of having more than one car.

Letmegetoff · 23/12/2023 17:10

They did say it was good that I had called rather than them coming across it themselves

OP posts:
Letmegetoff · 23/12/2023 17:11

I was going to give Admiral Multi Car a look actually, I think they always want a black box though which we wanted to avoid if possible, may have to just suck that up though

RandomMess · 23/12/2023 17:28

Oh just suck up the black box, if the car is driven really well it gives a massive discount the following year.

What happened in the end OP? I have a similar problem. I had no idea a named driver’s accident had to be declared !😳

Letmegetoff · 18/01/2024 20:11

I declared it and it was all okay. I'm glad I did as they called a few weeks into the policy to query my job description as when I was getting quotes on the comparison site I changed it from call centre to admin work! Some insurers seem to go through the details with a fine toothed comb, it's ridiculous!

Wow! Like there’s a big difference between those job descriptions! Did the premium go up?

BasiliskStare · 18/01/2024 20:15

Some years ago Admiral were promoting a family policy. It ended up so much cheaper for 2 adults and 1 DC of driving age . That may have gone now but just in case useful for you or anyone else.
