If you’re on the move over Christmas - how many miles are you doing?

Facing one of several long drives today over Christmas and out of curiosity I added it up on Google maps - 847 miles precisely! Split over 3-4 hrs today, 3-4 hrs on Xmas eve, 90 mins on Boxing Day, 3.5 hrs the following day and 4 hrs two days later. Joy!

Mines a 0.8 mile round trip, I will have to do that twice maybe even three times though so I'm prepared for spending a lot of time in my car driving....

Quitter23 · 23/12/2023 06:58

Around 600, and we both hate driving so they are a slog

Oatsamazing · 23/12/2023 06:59

71 miles, or 142 round trip. Even that's a bit too much for me as my 3yo DD will be constantly asking questions.

Longwhiskers · 23/12/2023 06:59

😂Well jel on the short trip to the fridge and back

Next Christmas we are not going anywhere. But this mega trip will take in three siblings, 8 nephews and nieces, and the grandparents. I find it hard to get excited because of the driving but also the unpacking, repacking, checking we haven’t left anything crucial from the kids Xmas presents. Staying in four different places in one week. It’ll be lovely once we’re at each place I am sure!

200 miles, 9 hour ferry crossing then another 600 miles.

Same again in reverse 😭

Grumpystripes · 23/12/2023 07:03

20000 give or take Grin

We're visiting relatives in Australia, well worth it as it means we're not hosting this year!

Logoplanter · 23/12/2023 07:12

We'll be doing just short of 250 miles in one day which will take just over 4 hours. Early start and late home but it'll be nice to see everyone and also get to sleep in my own bed.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 23/12/2023 07:19

We did 1040 km in exactly 10 hours yesterday from home in Switzerland to the ferry port in Puttgarden, 45 mins ferry then 10 mins to our summerhouse. On 26 December we‘re driving to Copenhagen about 2 hours) and then taking the ferry 20 hours to Oslo, then around 2.5 hours to MILs ski chalet at Hafjell. On 3rd December we‘ll return to Oslo and take the ferry (also around 20 hours) to Kiel, which should then be 10-11 hours driving back home.

we both enjoy driving which is good and DS (5) is well used to it now (we drive Switzerland to Denmark around 5 times per year). We were worried yesterday due to the storm and Christmas traffic but it was the fastest we‘ve ever done it and we didn’t rush. Now just about to get out of bed and enjoy the Christmas Hyyge with DH family. 🥰

rookiemere · 23/12/2023 08:09

100 miles today - up and back to my DPs, then 170 miles tomorrow and the same on Boxing Day.
Upside is no cooking or Christmas food shopping apart from a turkey crown and a couple of nights at the Premier Inn - not sure if breakfast will be available though Grin.

Groupofone · 23/12/2023 08:14

Happily none. Staying in London which is emptying out nicely. Done no food shopping yet, will be hitting M&S later so that will probably put 1.2 miles on the clock...

IchabodKrane · 23/12/2023 08:15

Wednesday we did a round trip of 400 miles 14 hours in the car (and a ferry) and we get to do it all again this Wednesday.

shellyleppard · 23/12/2023 08:19

My dad's going to be doing 600 miles over Christmas and new year!!! 😳😳 He's 78 and I'm worried.....but he insists he's fine. For context 300 mile round trip to spend Christmas with us. Then he's going to his brothers for new years so another 300 mile round trip. Small island.....not!!! 🌲❤️

Xiaoxiong · 23/12/2023 08:22

Christmas Day: 201 miles drive
Boxing Day: 40 miles round trip to drop the dog, then 6,257 mile flight
Day after Boxing Day: 324 mile drive

This is to get from DH's family to my family!

Longwhiskers · 23/12/2023 09:41

The big continental drive beats ours! Perhaps the roads are nicer Switzerland to Denmark!

I dread these huge drives and the packing unpacking and organisation involved but once we’re underway it’s fine. Off we go!

That’s a lot of driving! We’re doing about 350 miles in total to get to and from my parents house.

I don’t remember the last time I travelled so far over Christmas. What are the busiest times on the roads, does anyone know? We’re going early tomorrow.

BarrelOfOtters · 23/12/2023 09:49

I used to do a 4hour ferry and then 4hour drive, the last hour on dark twisty often icy country roads. There was always a worry the ferry wouldn’t go or the weather would be really bad. To visit family.

for the last 11 years I’ve stayed at home and wake up here on Christmas Day so thankful that travel worry isn’t there. I visit family in spring or summer now!

Polis · 23/12/2023 09:57

I have just added it up. Nearly 800 miles. All in the UK.

SleepingisanArt · 23/12/2023 10:08

Day trip of 180 miles each way (4 hours each way thanks to the roads - non motorway). Visiting someone who won't have overnight guests, won't go and stay with anyone else, hotels are eye-watering prices because its Christmas (and they aren't great), and kicked up a fuss at being on their own.... Will do my duty and then enjoy the rest of Xmas and the New Year.

Longwhiskers · 23/12/2023 10:30

I’m wishing everyone good driving. We’re an hour in and already had one stop to a child feeling car sick. Opened the tin of car sweets and on a choose a song each game on Spotify. Anything to pass the time!

Nottingham to Penrith via Liverpool and back. So probably about 400 miles.

BiddyPop · 23/12/2023 12:51

Without any added extras, trips to town or driving to local walking spots etc, at least 850km before NY. And there is a dinner another direction 1 day as well not added.

Journey down tomorrow, journey back at the end, and a bunch of trips between 2 houses while there. We'll bring both cars down but do a fair bit in the same car while there - but also need the flexibility to split up at times and DD will also do some of the driving when we're there but is only insured in 1 car so need both. (Dd may even drive us back from the dinner so we can both enjoy a glass of wine!!😁 there is finally a payoff!).

And I may have to add another trip of well over 600km to it for NY...
