Why are dogs wearing clothes all of a sudden ??!

For years and years (I’m old!) I’ve only ever seen the occasional greyhound type or yorkie wearing a simple coat if the weather was really cold …….

Since October this year suddenly about 90% of the dogs I’m seeing daily (I jog twice a week in park and go for long walks) are wearing coats or jumpers or what look like wetsuits with legs ??!! These are fluffy / furry breeds too (poodle mixes , collie / lab types) all sorts and this has been when the temperature has been mild ?? Nowhere near freezing !! Is this a new thing? Won’t they overheat ??!!

Because he gets really, really^^ muddy. The "wetsuit type thing" means I only have to clean his paws and not all of him before he's allowed back in the house.

Goodness, @muddydoggy , I'd be looking for boots for her as well!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 22/12/2023 23:55

One of mine is currently wearing a jumper at home at night. She had hair hair cut last week and is feeling the cold. She hasn't a pick of weight on her so no extra fat to keep her warm. Previously she was fine when she was groomed but started shivering around 3 years ago so I bought a few fleece jumpers.

My mini dachshund wears a warm coat, she has short fur and low to the ground so shivers when it's cold and wet. She hates putting it on but walks better in the rain.
I don't agree with jumpers or fun clothing though.

My friend has a bedroom for her dog (she said she was inspired by MrsHinch), it looks exactly the same as the kids rooms but smaller furniture and includes a little wardrobe for all the dogs clothes and accessories. She cooks him meals from scratch, he drinks filtered water and he has a little chair in the living room. I think as time goes on a lot of people are seeing dogs as one of their kids/part of the family and treating them like they are.

Really? That is so strange and sad.

Mine wears a very simple lightweight waterproof coat on really wet days. She's newly rescued and she's terrified of being dried with a towel, so it's to reduce that stress for her. I'm not a fan of dressing dogs up for the sake of it though.

MargaritaThyme · 23/12/2023 00:29

Because of ridiculous ‘fur baby’ (🤮) bullshit. Dogs are not ‘fur babies’ they are domesticated animals & should be treated as such.

Idiots infantilise & anthropomorphise their dogs, dressing them in ridiculous unnecessary costumes, carrying them around, not training them properly, letting them off the lead without proper recall, letting them jump up at strangers etc etc. then re-home them when they get bored of them or the breed goes out of fashion. It’s pathetic.

caringcarer · 23/12/2023 00:56

My 2 have coats but only wear them for walks when the temperature drops below 3 or 4 degrees.

TheTecknician · 23/12/2023 09:36

Similarly, at one time dogs had a simple lead or leash for walkies, with the exception of guide dogs, working sniffer dogs and so on. Now Julius K9 harnesses are all the rage.

margotrose · 23/12/2023 09:37

Mine wears a coat in very cold temperatures because otherwise he shivers massively and is really miserable.

That's different- harnesses are much better for some dogs.

pleasejustnawta · 23/12/2023 09:42

Dogs are now taking their position as the Master Race as we humans have messed the world up so much. They figure they need the threads to go with it, although I'm not convinced as I think their fur is fabulous enough.

Spendonsend · 23/12/2023 09:44

Keeps the mud off so you only have to clean paws.

I don't know why they're so popular - they're awful for joint development.

A well fitting harness that allows free movement of the joints is fair enough, but unfortunately a JuliusK9 is neither of those things!

margotrose · 23/12/2023 09:45

@ErrolTheDragon there's loads of research out there about cross shoulder harnesses and why they're so bad for joint development.

Brendabigbaps · 23/12/2023 09:47

My low to the ground breed wears an all in one equifleece on particularly muddy days to keep her clean. We live in an area that every green space turns into a mud pit.

and no I don’t call my dog a fur baby!
some people are just ignorant

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/12/2023 09:48

I'll probably need a drink or two if I tried wrangling mine into something like that, repeat that 3 times a day and I'll be a raging alcoholic.

So, no. They shall remain naked.

DominoRules · 23/12/2023 09:49

A lot of my dog friends use them to stop the dogs getting so muddy, round by us is horrid at the moment.

I don’t use one, have a very active breed so he’d get too hot, plus I worry about it getting caught on undergrowth/brambles. He’s a mud magnet but fortunately isn’t bothered by being hosed down when we get home!

BarkHorse · 23/12/2023 09:50

Interesting reading. I felt slightly guilty during the cold snap as my dog seemed to be the only one without a jumper or coat when I was out walking him!

AwkwardPaws27 · 23/12/2023 09:51

NoisyDachshunddd · 22/12/2023 22:44

You’re seeing equafleeces. They are to keep the hideous mud off dogs and minimize the need for washing down. Loads of dogs don’t like hosing or baths, and it just creates work hence euqafleeces.

^ this
My spaniel will seek out and wallow in any water and/or mud. The equafleece keeps him clean & dry, I only need to wash his paws (& sometimes his ears, depending how deep he's gone in!).
Keeps the car & house cleaner too, & means I'm not planning his walks around whether I have time to bath him or not.

Exactly this. She takes an hour to shower and dry as well and I can't be doing that after every walk so some form of clothing that can be taken off and shoved in the washing machine is far more preferable.

BoobyDazzler · 23/12/2023 09:55

My lurcher wears a coat in minus temperatures but he’s 12kg and hasn’t got an ounce of fat on him.

yanbu op.
although i do confess, my black dog does wear a high-vis jacket at night.

Yes mine too. Shes a small black dog and a high vis is safer for her and me. We match. I have a high vis jacket 😂
