Nits- should I just cut my hair??

I’ve been growing my hair for years and it’s down to my bum. Extremely thick and clearly, extremely long.

My daughter brought nits home during the summer holidays, after going to a party. She’s free of them and has been ever since. I got them and despite treating and combing my hair (thinking I was finally free of them as I stopped finding them in my comb and stopped scratching my head) my baby has them again, so I can only conclude because she’s far more affectionate than my eldest DD I must have missed a few in my hair and they’ve jumped into hers and we’re now into months of trying to get rid of the buggers - just me and my baby hugging all the time and sharing the pests!

I told DH I should cut my hair at this point. I’m thinking a bob or pixie cut so the comb just glides through my hair, rather than constantly getting stuck at points. It takes hours each time I comb through at the moment. It’s a nightmare to comb and I’m sure I can’t physically get all of them out as I can’t see where I’m combing at the back and there’s just so much hair. He keeps telling me I’ll regret it as it’s taken years to get it to this length, but what else can I do? 😩

He said he will comb it for me, but he’s very slap-dash with everything and can barely see (he said our baby had no nits recently when there was plenty on the comb when I combed through). So I really am on my own when it comes to getting them out of the house!

Cutting your hair won't stop you getting them. Tea tree conditioner and comb in sections daily will work. Inc whole family

Also clean, hot wash all bedding. Hats, anything that touches hair

Was it Hedrin Once you used? If you use that you get all stages of the life cycle and there is no need for combing.

You can't comb them out of super thick , long hair. Go chemical, and you will need several boxes per application. Do it at least twice and use straighteners in between. Agree tea tree spay after.

@Cheeesus I used Hedrin protect and go but I’ll give the one you’ve suggested a try.

Lyclear Once is brilliant - my pharmacist cousin advised me it was the best one to use and she was right! Didnt leave hair feeling horrible either and was easy to wash out. That and a nitty gritty comb whilst the Lyclear Once is in your hair. Please dont cut your hair off because of nits, if I did that id regret it for ever after.

Lemon cologne is your friend. It deters them and keeps them at bay and kills any that are already on you.

Cheap and far better than chemicals.

Decant into a spray bottle or buy a ready made spray which is dearer than buying it in a bottle.

Don't cut your hair unless you actually want to!

My personal recommendation is NitWits - a one-time treatment that kills lice and eggs and thus doesn't need repeating. Do yourself and everyone else in the house at the same time.

I chose this one because my DD couldn't cope with me combing her hair - she's a teen now and still chooses to wash and condition it every day instead of brushing it! I also have long, thick hair and it worked fine for me too.

I'd have had DH use it too but his 'hairstyle' involves a Bic razor so it wasn't necessary. 😊 Just made sure he shaved his head on the day we did our hair, just in case.

Maybe check hats and perhaps change a pillowcase, but don't waste your time boil washing bedding and other fabrics. No healthy louse will leave a human head for a piece of fabric. If you find one on your pillowcase, it's already dying or dead and isn't going to recolonise somebody's head and lay eggs.
