What is a reasonable time for a café to stop serving before it closes?

If a coffee shop closes at 6, when would you expect the last time to order a coffee and a snack to be before they close the tills?

I'd be useless at running a cafe 🤣🤣🤣🤣🎅😁

If the cafe owner takes the attitude that the customer can go elsewhere they’re giving away business. Why would they do that? Presumably they want to make money.

Entitled 😂

Yes I think you would @Lilithlogic 😂😂

I'd be having them clean their own mess up 😁

Candycurrantbun · 22/12/2023 08:05

I'd expect to be given a takeaway cup even if sitting in from 5.45.

evtheria · 22/12/2023 08:14

I worked for a coffee chain for a decade (and one shortly before that). Our rule was to serve up until the last second! With people able to sit in until that time, too, though we did let them know we were closing soon (if they couldn't tell we had begun cleaning and mopping areas...)

The only thing was maybe giving things 'in takeout' about 10' beforehand, but that wasn't a rule and it depended on how busy your close was etc.

If somewhere is actually making food, I'd expect them to stop serving things off the menu perhaps 20-30' beforehand.

If anyone really wants to put their money into a coffee shop that's fair to their staff , please don't choose Costa . Staff aren't paid after closing time and are treated quite appallingly in most of the ones I worked in / covered .
Also now owned by Coca Cola x

Staff don't get paid after CC shuts? So cafe closes doors to customers at eg 7pm, that's the actual end of their paid shift?! Wow.

530pm. Cleaning the coffee machines can take 30 minutes. Mopping the floors, recording the waste etc. If its an independent business the proprietor could have been in since 6am and would probably like to go home eventually and spend time with their family

Lilithlogic · 22/12/2023 07:45

No expect the owner to shut when they want it shut, rather than when the owner deems it. The customer can go elsewhere

@Lilithlogic your posts are most strange. Sounds like you run a cafe?! & aren't well suited to it. Of course an owner can shut it when they want to, if they don't mind going out of business if they're not open when they say they will be.

I've just seen this. Yes, you would !!

We once went to a cafe that closed at 6. We arrived 4pm and ordered food. At 5pm while we were stil eating they started putting the chairs up around us. We left at 520 when the hoover came out.

But that's irrelevant. If THEY want to leave at say 6, then they need to have an earlier closing time. It's ridiculous to say close at 6, but all you can do from 5.30 is watch me clean. Closing time is when customers can't buy stuff not when you're going home.

Almondmum · 22/12/2023 09:26

Surely they close when they like but they need to be clear about it? So, a sign saying 6pm closing, 5.30 last orders or whatever.

And it's up to the owners to treat their staff well and pay them properly, not customers to anticipate that they may be working unpaid overtime if you ask for a coffee at 5pm.

ChilledToTheBone · 22/12/2023 09:39

5 15. A coffee machine for example can take 30 min to completely clean and shut down. Likewise kichen needs cleaning.
. Dc worked in a cafe they served until 3. Closed doors 3.30. Then 1 hour clean down and prep for following day whilst doors closed to customers
