Is this level of illness normal?

Hello,

I am messaging because I am so worried about my son. He’s 14 months and started nursery in September at 11 months. Since the second week, he has not been well. I’m talking overlapping bacterial chest infection, conjunctivitis, bronchiolitis and too many coughs and colds to count. There hasn’t been a day since then that he hasn’t coughed, at least at nighttime. I worry so much that there is something wrong with his immune system. They say it’s going to be bad when they start nursery but this is insanity. Poor boy cannot catch a break! Does anyone else have experiences like this?

Is there any asthma in baby’s family?

RhianneD · 21/12/2023 13:48

Hello, not in close family. I have some aunties who have it, so great aunts? He typically doesn’t have a wheeze with these illnesses I should mention. Thank you

Honestly sounds completely normal. Both of my boys did the same. All fine now.

DS had endless issues at that age from nursery. Everything you've listed actually! DD didn't but I assume that's because second child meant she was a bit more exposed to it before from her brother. DS is now 9 and has rarely been off school for 5 years so it's just one of those horrible phases

Yes that's what happens when they start nursery it's one bug after another

So annoying but people say it's good for their immune eventually

stargirl1701 · 21/12/2023 14:01

Yes, it's normal.

RhianneD · 21/12/2023 14:23

That’s such a relief to hear - thank you! Sounds like he has an amazing immune system now :)

I'd say that's normal! Mine have a constant runny nose and on/off cough most of the winter once they start nursery. It's lessens in the summer months and as they get a bit older. Mine thankfully don't seem to be prone to the nastier illnesses and we generally get away with them just having bad colds but otherwise well.

plusjamais · 21/12/2023 14:41

Ah, it's normal but doesn't make it any less distressing to witness! One of mine seemed to transform overnight into a little human petri dish after his first day at nursery. There's no harm talking to your GP or a Pharmacist though.

happened to dc1 and is one of the main reasons we opted for different childcare (childminder) for dc2

We had 1.5 yrs of constant running noses, coughing, sneezing etc with both of mine. it’s heartbreaking at the time. I actually didn’t know how happy and chilled my youngest was until he was three as he’d been so unwell and miserable.

to console you there is some evidence that kids need to become unwell to protect their immune systems against illnesses like leukaemia.

mindutopia · 21/12/2023 15:09

Yes, pretty normal. Both of mine had a cough from November to May their first 2 years of nursery, then it settles down. They started nursery at 9 and 11 months.

Interestingly, compared to others in their class (Y1 and Y6 now) who I assume weren’t in nursery so young they are rarely ill. Maybe 2 missed days a year from school.
