Alternative career or top up job for a therapist

Inspired by another thread where people gave excellent advice on moving career. I'm a talk therapist and while I have a thriving practise I am not happy with my take home pay. I've already increased my fee. Any higher and I don't think it would be morally right to do so.

What else can I do? Either as a career or as another job to top up. Due to the concentration taken for my role once my child goes to school I can't do any more therapy but I could work as something else for one or two days.

Any ideas?

Thanks

My mate is a trauma therapist specialising in CBT and EMDR. She does very well from referrals from claims management /insurance companies treating people have been involved in serious accidents.

From another angle - can you cut your overheads? I have a treatment room in my garden (I do sports massage). It cost about £6k to build in total, but it’s mine and I now no longer have to rent a room or travel to clients. And having it in the garden means it still feels separate from ‘home’. You could probably do it for less as you probably don’t need as big a space. If you have the ability, it might be a good investment for the business.

Sounds like you are on a good wage and in an interesting and flexible career.

what about something entirely different eg dog walking to get you outside?

Agree with this.
Maybe not exactly dog walking, but something which uses a completely different set of skills.

Yes I'd like something completely different! I do like walking. I'm not really into dogs tbough! Ha. Not sure if I'd be up for retail or cleaning. But maybe admin in a charity that I appreciate or something. So far I have not come across one or two day jobs. I guess that would be 7 to 14 hours.

can I ask what you charge per session? I think £60 per session is about average around here, but Zoom sessions are often more taxing than face to face, so maybe you could do more client hours if less of them were virtual sessions?

GoldenlocksofHope · 21/12/2023 13:35

I charge £65 for face to face and £60 for online. I'm in North East England. I wouldn't be comfortable charging any more. There are way more qualified therapist charging this rate and lower.

I find face to face more tiering than online. Maybe partly, due to the traveling I have to do to get to my therapy room.

How about admin for a counselling charity? You could approach them directly and see if they have a few hours of paid work?

LeafHunter · 21/12/2023 16:17

I’m a therapist.

also do 20 hours (UKCP recommendation) and have a child. Rest of the time I work pt for a charity co-writing for them (not on any therapeutic work) and co-lead a charity consulting for organisations going through issues.

i would hugely recommend doing something not linked to the work at all. A friend works in a cafe one day per week, another does customised sewing.
