Has anything near you permanently changed or not survived the lockdowns?

A toddler class I went to has stopped. It went on for ten years but struggled after the lockdowns and now has stopped for good. I know it’s silly to feel a bit sad - the baby and toddler market is saturated with classes.

I wondered if anyone else has had something permanently close its doors after lockdowns.

Our local pub. But it was a shit hole anyway and people were always surprised it hung on as long as it did.

Bluevelvetsofa · 20/12/2023 22:38

Pubs, shops , restaurants.

Heronatemygoldfish · 20/12/2023 22:51

Loads. Two local chippies. The really reasonable cost holiday club my DC used to go to and love. John Lewis (sob!).

dontforgetme · 20/12/2023 22:52

One of my good friends is a totally different person.

My hairdresser gave up her shop when her lease was up and decided to work from home Her shop was in the town centre. Her home isnt on a bus route so i now have to use taxis.

VeganNugsNotDrugs · 20/12/2023 22:55

Our school clearly realised that having the kids sent in wearing their PE kits on their PE day saved a whole lot faffing around and this has continued since

flowerchild2000 · 20/12/2023 22:56

Lots of locally owned businesses, and I got Long Covid, permanently disabled. I lost everything including my friends! Just finished another crying spell. It really hurts to see people saying Covid is just a cold, and act like millions didn't die or become permanently disabled.

My job at Debenhams, lockdown speed up the inevitable

@VeganNugsNotDrugs I love that this has continued! As a child I hated getting dressed in front of others too.

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/12/2023 23:07

Local branches of HSBC and TSB have closed so have independent greengrocers and newsagents.

AnyFucker · 20/12/2023 23:09

Gp surgeries

JenniferBooth · 20/12/2023 23:12

YY @AnyFucker One of the biggest changes

Shufflebumnessie · 20/12/2023 23:17

Our local soft play and mini golf both permanently closed.
The local garden centre and community centre both used to offer great family activity days in the run up to Christmas but the last time either held them was 2019.
Our favourite restaurant (although that's probably more to do with the fact the reinvented themselves/the menu and became overpriced with a crap choice of food!).

DazedandConfused1234 · 20/12/2023 23:20

Being able to turn up lots of places without having to book ahead. Drives me nuts that even going for a swim has to be booked ahead of time.

And yes, GP surgeries are a nightmare now.

And work, of course, for those in offices, at least. There are some days now when I'm the only one of my team in the office. I like the flexibility of WFH but do miss the team atmosphere. But you can't gain one without losing the other sadly.

DrCoconut · 20/12/2023 23:22

childcare. So many places went under and now its super difficult to get places, especially if there are constraints such as needing DC picked up from specific schools or SEN.

purpleme12 · 20/12/2023 23:32

The Rainbow Factory in Leeds closed 😢😢
Loved that place so much.
So unique. Never seen any other place like it

transformandriseup · 20/12/2023 23:33

I was also going to say childcare. There were three childminders in our village pre Covid and now there are none.

Ah I'm really sorry!

I currently have covid for the second time, I'm a bit tired of people saying "why are you still testing?? No-one cares anymore"
Well my dad is seriously ill and I don't want to be the one to finish him off 😒 so I will happily keep my covid to myself x

ShortMotherfuckerWithTheIvoryHair · 20/12/2023 23:36

Most of my friendships 😢

Nat6999 · 20/12/2023 23:39

John Lewis in Sheffield, the council paid millions in rent to keep the store open, John Lewis decided to not reopen after lockdown.

doyouwanticewiththat · 20/12/2023 23:40

Loads of shops on our high street , my business ..

tobee · 20/12/2023 23:41

Our council are still continuing the policy of making us book things. For eg a trip to the recycling centre and going to firework display. No turning up ad hoc.

Re the recycling booking it's not generally a problem but you do have to book a few hours in advance. And I don't think you can do several trips in one day.

Yes a few book/gift type shops closed and there are more restaurants/cafes/chicken shops/bakeries than ever

Nando’s is often half full now it was always packed. They turn you away as too busy with Deliveroo orders
