I hate my job. I am a Pharmacist. It's stressful, undervalued, underpaid and the demands on us as a Profession are getting more and more and more with no increase in wages. I'd like to change career but at 40 with 2 kids I don't feel I have the time, mental ability or motivation to fully retrain. I enjoy being home but my current job doesn't allow me to do this. I love cooking but that doesn't earn alot of money and I don't have patience to make it look fancy. Any genius advice?

Still a challenging post but a change - pharmacist in a Community MH team. Ours work with psychiatrists, patients and GPs with prescriptions and tritating, meet with patients for reviews (often completing their full 6 month review in lieu of the psychiatrists), involvement in mdts and clinical treatment planning and so on. Also have much more knowledge than the psychiatrists regarding the interplay between psychiatric meds and other meds.

I used to work in mental health and would love to go back if there was an opening.

Have you thought of going into teaching Chemistry? Not amazing pay or conditions apart from holidays that would avoid need of childcare but always in demand! Good luck!

There's a recruitment and retention crisis in teaching for a reason... And starting salary for a teacher is £7k less than bottom of band 6 NHS so I don't think teaching would be the answer.

I'm in nursing not pharmacy but just had a quick Google and found some interesting jobs.
https://careers.circlehealthgroup.co.uk/jobs/clinical-pharmacist-50349/ that's Ross Hall in Ggow

https://apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk/Job/JobDetail?JobId=172543 trainee ACP in Hairmyres. They would put you through your masters but would be helpful if you had prescribing. Not the best role if you are struggling with the responsibility aspect though as you would be dealing with very acutely unwell patients.

https://apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk/Job/JobDetail?JobId=172366 I think this would be a really good jump from community pharmacy.

https://apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk/Job/JobDetail?JobId=174536 good secondment opportunity for a sidestep. Education is an excellent string to have on your bow.

https://apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk/Job/JobDetail?JobId=174507 another education role

https://apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk/Job/JobDetail?JobId=169646 I think this could be really interesting and you could reduce your hours in community and do this along side which would leave the door open if you didn't like it.

There are 2 very large pharmaceutical companies in Ayrshire.. GSK in Irvine and DSM in Dalry but there are no jobs going at present, worth keeping an eye on for the future. There are a lot of jobs maybe slightly out of the box. You will have 20 years of a career to go so don't be put off by retraining at your age as there is plenty of time. I'm in a part education/part clinical role at present and glad I did it. I struggled with full time clinical due to the acuity of the area where I work and I felt so responsible for people's lives that it was hard to shut off when going home.

Lots of interesting suggestions worthy of follow up investigation.

OP, hopefully something easy, well paid and local will fall into your lap soon.

The issues around scope creep and politics of the Physicians Associate role is a shit show waiting to explode. I would avoid it like the plague. I think you could put your pharma experience to much better use.

Medical device manufacturing or Pharmaceutical Manufacturing?

I know of lots of pharmacists in compliance roles such as regulatory affairs or post market surveillance reporting.

salary is £50k plus usually

CQC Pharmacy inspector. Loads of flexibility and interesting work where you’re paid for your knowledge rather than actual “work”. Civil service terms and conditions too. Well worth a look, good luck! X

Thank you for taking the time to lost those. Kind people do exist! I have such poor confidence that the exciting roles are many miles from what I feel capable of. The primary care role remains an option but the vacancy listed is too far away from home. Rosehall seems to paybless than NHS with fewer benefits too. I only work part time also and would maintain this and its a full time post. Iam keeping my eyes open and checking the jobs boards daily. The advanced practitioner role sounds so interesting but again I don't feel qualified in an acute setting like that and feel the fear of being responsible for deaths even considering it. Also would start pay scale at band 6

OP,

In the nicest possible way, if you want to move you need to ‘man up’ a bit. It’s an awful phrase, but the right one here.

It’s unusual for anyone to meet 100% of the job spec requirements. If you get over half, consider applying. Most blokes would.

On the part time bit - get in touch and ask if they’d consider part time. Most jobs are advertised as full time as part time is a much narrower pool to recruit from.

(and you already have responsibility for preventing people dying, so that’s not new).

Get on LinkedIn, update your profile and mark it as looking for jobs. Some recruiters might find you and help with ideas.

As a reality check, you’re unlikely to find something that:
can match your current pay from day 1.
is very close to home
is less stress
is less responsibility
same part time arrangement

In reality, some of those probably matter more to you than others. It’s worth having a think about which.

(also, ask any reps you have contacts with).
