Can reed diffusers cause headaches?

I've been suffering with tension headaches for a few weeks which I don't normally have. My forehead has been sore almost every day. I've just realised I bought a couple of reed diffusers for my house from tk maxx and put them on window sills at around the same time the headaches started. I've not really used them before. Is this a known thing that they can cause headaches or is it probably not that?

They make plenty of people sick.

so do scented candles, fabric softener, wax melts, etc.

headaches are one of the more mild reactions.

Yes. I fucking hate the things. Scented candles and air fresheners too. I love candles so only burn beeswax ones.

Calpol plug-ins are vile as well. Tried them once for my toddler and I ended up with a banging headache. We just do Olbas oil in a diffuser now.

Yes absolutely. I also find strong plug in air freshener give me headaches and make me feel sicky and rough

OMG yes.

Fragrance is a major headache trigger, esp for migraine.

I don't understand why people want to pollute their homes and workplaces with these chemicals. It may smell lovely to one person but another is being made ill.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 20/12/2023 22:15

Yep me too. My DH used to light those bloody burner things and whilst the scent wasn't unpleasant, the strength of the smell belting out into our small lounge made me feel so ill. He used to moan that I was being dramatic. Also strong perfume gives me a headache too.

KnittedPond · 20/12/2023 22:35

Yes. They make me nauseated, especially in warm rooms.

Andthereyougo · 20/12/2023 22:38

Yes.
Also those bloody awful plug in things.
I once had a two day headache and nausea from breathing in Clary Sage. Held bottle beneath my nose and took a deep breath — stupid of me.

Finteq · 20/12/2023 22:38

Yes

Anything with a strong smell gives me a headache.

Candles, incense sticks and strong perfume. Plug in air freshers. I avoid any artificial smells in the house.

I assume Reed diffusers would be no different. So avoid them.

Ariela · 20/12/2023 23:49

Yes, can't stay in a house with them or I get headaches

Blinkityblonk · 20/12/2023 23:51

I am also sensitive to artificial fragrances, not just these, but in cleaning products and washing powder, so these wouldn't be for me, they trigger migraines/make them worse.

Blinkityblonk · 20/12/2023 23:52

I'd get rid of these, drink a lot to stay hydrated as well in winter, you think you don't need it but with the central heating on you can kind of dry up!

Blinkityblonk · 20/12/2023 23:53

Obviously if you continue to have the headaches, though, go and see a GP, I follow a GP led headache pathway for treatment choices and it's very helpful.

lots of perfume particularly sweet (Angel) scented candles and air fresheners

lilies give me a terrible headache and vanilla scent, pomegranate scents has been popular these last few years makes my head hurt 🤕

tortoiseshellcats · 21/12/2023 00:35
