If you've moved abroad, what do you miss?

I'm currently on holiday in Southern Europe and I cannot find decent crisps 😭 I love meaty style ones, so roast chicken, beef and bacon etc. It all seems to be lightly salted or cheese at the most. I also seem to have misplaced my bag of earl grey tea bags that I brought with me, can't find them either. It made me think about people who move abroad and won't necessarily have access to things they're used to.
Disclaimer: Obviously there are much bigger things going on around the world, and I feel very grateful to be on holiday.

Cadburys Creme Eggs
Mince Pies
Monster Munch
Walker Prawn and cocktail crisps
Gingernut biscuits
Crumpets
Self raising Flour
Gravy granules
Paxo stuffing mix
Cheese that doesn't have hard wax round the edge

Quite a list, do you just get used to it or just do pack a suitcase of the above when you come back?

Funnily enough, decent Earl Grey tea is one of the easier food and drinkstuffs to obtain in mainland Europe. Twinings has a factory in Poland, I think, and I‘ve found boxes of 25 bags in fairly small grocery stores in various countries. It also keeps for ages and doesn’t weigh much so easy to stock up with loads.
I always get a box worth of stuff from one of the expat shops before Christmas, they guarantee no customs duties because they have EU warehouses. Treats tend to be pickled onions, chutney (although I can make my own too), mince pies and mincemeat, stuffing, tinned custard (again, I make my own too, tins are back-up), Sarsons vinegar (enough for the year), Terrys chocolate orange, matchmakers, Cadbury fingers, Frazzles (embarrassing!), Christmas crackers, jelly, Soreen malt loaf and so on. Lots of very unhealthy stuff basically, which is why it’s only once a year.

The only thing I really really miss is the occasional fish‘n‘chips. Not enough to move back to the UK though!

Sproutsandchocolate · 20/12/2023 17:09

I don’t live abroad anymore but I lived in a rural-ish part of china 15 years ago, I missed baked beans, chip shop chips, decent bread, decent cheese, various crisps and fab ice lollies weirdly even though I never really ate them before and I didn’t really eat them after I came back!

NovemberAutumn · 20/12/2023 17:11

I'm Australian.

I miss ;

  • dim sims
  • potato cakes (seriously why does the UK not have potato cakes?)
  • Twisties
  • battered scallops
  • heat in summer that goes all the way through to your bones
  • Christmas bbqs in the park
  • really decent Vietnamese cuisine in food courts

I was in Oz recently and recently diagnosed Coeliac so I could not even enjoy alot of the things I miss... except for gluten free dim sims which i got from Coles.

Bananalanacake · 20/12/2023 17:15

I'm in Germany and yes, I bring most of those things back apart from the mince pies. DH buys me tea in boxes of 480 from Amazon,

Redlarge · 20/12/2023 17:21

Proper bread and butter. Chocolate where I lived too.

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 20/12/2023 17:46

We can get everything where I am. We even have an Iceland 😂 prices are ridiculous though, I went in there the other day and they've got packs of 12 pigs in blankets, 2 for €10. I'm going to make my own!

natura · 20/12/2023 18:00

I went back to the UK a few months ago and was just gobsmacked by the sheer amount of choice of everything.

Biscuit and cake aisles stacked with what you'd only find here in the 'gourmet' section, 12 different types of olives stuffed with who even knows what, cheeses from every part of everywhere, out of season vegetables, the most specialist spices and sauces and options in the 'international' sections...

On the way to my friend's house immediately after leaving the airport I stopped at a petrol station for a snack and there were packs of ready-to-eat garlic king prawns in the 'snack' section – I was amazed!

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 20/12/2023 18:03

The radio and the pub

AlisonDonut · 20/12/2023 18:09

Extra mature cheddar.
Bottle of night nurse to knock you out when you are feeling really rough.
Proper Indian Curry from a proper Indian Restaurant.
Chinese take out food.

But two extra hours of sunlight a day, all year round, I'll take the hit.

Plus, Heinz Baked Beans brought here from the UK, are actually cheaper here than you can get them in the UK.

CrazylazyJane · 20/12/2023 18:13

Decent pubs not bars or beer halls
The M&S food hall
Chippy chips and properly battered fish
Cafes staying open past 3pm

And my best friend. I talk to my retired mum most days on FaceTime but with kids and time differences I rarely get to properly chat with my bestie and have those spontaneous D&Ms / therapy sessions on her couch with a cuppa

I moved to an Asian country many years ago. Was back in England for a year but now again in same country.
I miss so many food items. My family puts shipments and bring things when visiting or I take back when I visit England.
Crisps
cheese (extremely expensive here and most available cheese are processed)
fish and chips (haddock/cod fish)
salmon (can be bought here but extremely expensive!)
used to miss tea but found a replacement after many years. Funnily enough I live in a tea growing country.
jammy doggers, Jaffa cakes and other biscuits
These are just a few. Some can be found here now but the prices are much higher than what it is over in England.

Sgtmajormummy · 20/12/2023 18:21

I’m in Italy. I miss the crisp morning air, Summers that aren’t too hot (usually), helpful Dad types and British TV including the adverts!
I can get PG Tips at my local Indian supermarket, pot noodles are gaining popularity but since Brexit Marmite has been impossible to find.
My annual delivery from British Corner Shop* included Christmas crackers, pudding and cake, Heinz tins of soup, Custard Cream biscuits, Wispas and CurlyWurly bars.

  • They ship from Holland to avoid EU import tax…

Wondering if your in the same country as me Grin we have an Iceland close by but its EXTORTIONATE! I have to stop myself going in now.

Jeannie88 · 20/12/2023 18:32

When I did, for a year at university, I loved and totally embraced the new culture, was still Europe but still so different. However I did miss the news (no SM or the technology we have now, including mobile phones), different flavours of crisps, most of all my family and friends at home of course. Everything else, no problem, loved it! X

Humphriescushion · 20/12/2023 18:33

Not much now but have been abroad for a long so have adapted but probably fish and chips from a chip shop and malt vinegar.

Its extortionate here as well and I'm in Glasgow Grin

Lizzieregina · 20/12/2023 19:03

I definitely prefer tea and biscuit offerings over there. I can get all of that stuff here but it’s really expensive.

As a child, my favorite treat was a steak and kidney pudding with mushy peas, chips and gravy from the local Chinese chippy. I’d love to have one again, and I might think it’s awful! But one of these days I’ll get back to the UK and see if I can find it. Maybe it’s not even a thing any more, but was popular in the 70s.

istoodonlegoagain · 21/12/2023 05:39

Thank you all for the replies. @LadyGreySpillsTheTea I would kill for a bag of Frazzles right now, they are my absolute favourite ☺️. Was saying to my. dd that if we ever left the UK I'd probably lose a lot of weight. Chocolate is expensive here, and there doesn't seem to be the same sort of snacking culture either. It's really made me think how unhealthy we are, and the pound shops (of which I don't think there is either) are largely to blame. I also realized yesterday if I lived here that I'd have permanent BO, the only deodorant I can use is 7 euro!

I don't really miss anything anymore but I do bring certain things back from the UK each time I visit.

Mitchum deodorant, Thatchers cider, bacon (which is completely illegal but our car has never been searched).

I have enough teabags to last about three years, especially since I've become much more of a coffee person since moving.

greenacrylicpaint · 21/12/2023 05:45

cheddar (something similar to red leicester is often sold as cheddar here unless you go to a proper cheese or the expat shop where you pay £££ for a tiny block)

Frenchfancy · 21/12/2023 05:48

The things we routinely ask friends to bring include salad cream (for DD3) shreddies (for DD1) marmite (forDH) and wine gums (for me)

Oh and suet. I can't get suet anywhere.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 21/12/2023 05:51

Sudafed
Chestnuts
Self-raising flour
Chocolate chips for baking (only available at Christmas)
Small packets of crisps
Proper cider
Mini cheddars

Was quite sad when the English shop in Cologne went under.

LunaTheCat · 21/12/2023 05:53

Two words… mushy peas.
