Guinea pig hutches keep getting blown over in winds

I looked out the window earlier and noticed the guinea pig hutch on the other side of the garden upside down. The guinea pigs are fine, they were just sitting on the hutch ceiling. Trouble is, we don’t have any sheltered areas in our garden so the hutches go flying across the garden whenever there’s gusty winds. I don’t know what to do because it’ll just happen again!!

A few things they are too heavy so centre of mass is higher.

put them up against a wall or fence

weight them down - you can get u shaped metal rods to secure trampolines

depending on where you are 10 degrees is usually the cut off for bringing them in. Ours are now in utility room. Or bring them in at night.

if you have any bricks to either sit on the top of the hutch or if possible put the hutches on concrete and using eg L shaped brackets have them bolted to the ground and or screwed to a fence too ?

I’ve got both hutches against the fence but it’s not sheltered. I’ve got an old duvet over the top but it doesn’t seem to keep them in place. I can’t bolt them down because I move them to clean them.

what about screwing a hook each side of the cages against the fence and attaching a bungie type hook and rope to each hook in the fence ?

sorta like 0 (hook in fence) Cage then bungie cord and hook cliped or hooked into the fence hook, then next hook on fence and other end of the bungie cord attached to the fence hook. then the bungie cord keeps them strapped to the fence during the winds

that way when you need to clean them ect just unhook the bungie cord and reclip afterwards ?

@OracleofAragorn thats a good idea, thank you. I’ll look it up.

Could you bring the piggies indoors temporarily? I've heard of people using a bathtub as a makeshift cage!

They shouldn't climb out, heights terrify them

OracleofAragorn · 20/12/2023 02:50

thats an example of the hook for the fence, but using the bungie cord instead of the wire in this photo

The poor piggies, that must have been scary. Have you got any tent pegs lying around? Tie the legs and peg them to the ground. It might help secure them until you can get something more permanent sorted.

Could you secure the hutch to the fence post with washing line for now until you can secure it properly?
