John Lewis or Marks and Spencer

I don't live in the UK but was wondering is John Lewis considered more up market / mc/ umc than Marks and Spencer ?

Neither could be described as 'up market'

MaggieFS · 19/12/2023 18:26

Yes, JL would be more so than M&S, except for food. Both bastions of middle class Britain.

NAndJSaysVoteConservative · 19/12/2023 18:30

Wouldn't call either of them upmarket myself.

I'm pretty sure they both can 😄🧐.

But we note your point.

WhatsInStoreFor2024 · 19/12/2023 18:40

Well I'm not the only one saying it

Both are average high st shops, and both have declined massively over the years

CrushingOnRubies · 19/12/2023 19:15

I'd say JL was slightly posher than M&S but only because my nearest JL to me is 90 mins away so I don't go as often and it's more of an occasion

Also would say it probably depends on the store. A service station M&S food is probably less fancy than the food dept in the Oxford street store.

Why the interest?

Sundaefraise · 19/12/2023 19:18

I’d prefer a M&S voucher which I know isn’t what you asked, because it would be far easier to spend, I don’t know where my nearest John Lewis is.

mynameiscalypso · 19/12/2023 19:26

They're both very firmly middle class. Not much to chose between them but if it's a question of vouchers, I'd prefer John Lewis because they have more stuff you can spend it on.

Hawkerslife · 19/12/2023 19:26

I consider M&S better. I like their food and I buy clothes for both myself and the kids from there.

JL stores seem very dated and are usually located in dying high streets with increasingly low footfall. I wouldn't choose to visit a JL store for anything. With that said I did buy our bin and washing machine from JL but did so online.

ThePoshUns · 19/12/2023 19:27

I consider JL to be posher, I buy more from M&S

Torganer · 19/12/2023 19:27

They’re different shops. One does food and clothes, the other does pretty much everything, more of a department store.

Torganer · 19/12/2023 19:28

If it’s a voucher option, then I would say JL as you can use in waitrose too.

Talipesmum · 19/12/2023 19:32

John Lewis clothes choices are generally more “upmarket” than M&S.
Food wise - John Lewis food is = waitrose. And Waitrose food is fairly much equivalent to M&S food - they are both thought of as pretty good, one notch above general supermarkets.

Why do you ask?

bananamangoes · 19/12/2023 19:46

Id rather have a JL voucher

There's this marvellous new thing called the world wide web 🤣

Goldenbear · 19/12/2023 19:50

Definitely John Lewis as it's high street presence is limited to wealthy areas. Waitrose food is miles better as there is more choice of unusual products to actually 'cook' with, IMO Marks food ha don't really have ingredients, just loysbof processed meals! Equally, if you do have one of their ready made meals, Waitrose is definitely superior, the quality of the ingredients is noticeable. Marks for other stuff is not as high end so clothes, furniture etc

But then you lose a fiver on the postage for John Lewis and the returns are a faff.

Goldenbear · 19/12/2023 19:54

That should be 'food halls don't'
